Former Aggies CB Kevin Smith Included On 2024 College Football HOF Ballot

Kevin Smith could be headed to the College Football Hall of Fame.

Kevin Smith made a name for himself in coverage during his time in College Station. He's a legend in the realm of Texas A&M football

He potentially could be enshrined in college football immortality come 2024.

Smith was included on the 2024 College Football Hall Of Fame ballot Monday morning. The National Football Foundation (NFF) and College Hall of Fame included Smith, along with 78 players and nine coaches from the FBS level. The ballot also featured 101 players and 32 coaches from the divisional ranks.

A four-year player for the Aggies (1988-91), Smith posted a school record for career interceptions with 20, a record that still stands today. The turnover total also broke the Southwest Conference record, initially set by SMU's Russell Carter with 18 in 1983.

As the team's top defensive back, Smith helped A&M win the Southwest Conference in 1991, helping the program finish with the nation's top-ranked defense (224.4 yards per game). For his efforts, Smith was named a first-team All-American that season and a semifinalist for Defensive Player of the Year and the Jim Thorpe Award, given out to the nation's top defensive back.

Smith finished his tenure as a three-time All-Southwest Conference member and finished with over 115 tackles. He was selected 17th overall by the Dallas Cowboys in the 1992 NFL Draft and spent nine seasons (1992-2000) with the franchise. In 1996, he was named a second-team All-Pro after registering five interceptions.

One of the top defensive backs of his class, Smith was a pinnacle force in coverage during the Cowboys' three Super Bowls in 1992, 1993 and 1995. For his career, Smith recorded 19 interceptions and 91 pass breakups to go along with 278 tackles.

While being enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame will be a first, Smith was inducted into the Texas A&M Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997. This marks the third straight year Smith has been on the ballot.

Membership voting will continue through June 30, and the announcement of the class is expected to come early next year. The 2024 College Football Hall of Fame Class will be officially inducted during the 66th NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 10, 2024 in Las Vegas.
