Ex-Texas A&M Aggies Coach Kevin Sumlin Arrested On DUI Charges
Former Texas A&M Aggies coach Kevin Sumlin was arrested and charged with driving under the influence Saturday morning in Florida, according to a Hillsborough County police report.
Sumlin was hired this offseason as co-offensive coordinator at Maryland by Mike Locksley. The Terps were on a bye week following their loss to No. 3 Ohio State.
According to the report, Sumlin was pulled over around 1 a.m. on U.S. Highway 301 in Tampa. Police requested him to provide a breathalyzer, to which he refused. Per the report, this will result in a license suspension for at least one year.
Sumlin, 59, pleaded not guilty at the time and waived arraignment. He was released around 9 a.m. If prosecuted, it carries a maximum sentence of 60 days in prison.
The Diamondback first reported the news.
Hired from Houston in 2011, Sumlin led the Aggies to an 11-win season in 2012, capped off with a Heisman-winning campaign from Johnny Manziel. Sumlin helped A&M secure its biggest win in SEC play with a 29-24 upset over Alabama at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
Things turned south after the 2012 season. Sumlin never won more than nine games during his six-year stay from 2013 on. He was fired in 2017 after leading A&M to a 7-5 finish.
Sumlin quickly was hired by Arizona and lasted two-and-half seasons (2018-20) before being fired after going 9-20. He was then hired by the USFL's Houston Gamblers for the 2022 season, leading the franchise to a 3-7 record.
This season, Maryland's offense has averaged 422.3 yards per game and 33.4 points per contest. Senior quarterback Taulia Tagovialoa has thrown for 1,926 yards and 16 touchdowns against five interceptions.
In six seasons with A&M, Sumlin posted a 51–26 record. He finished 25-23 in conference play.
The Aggies return to Kyle Field this Saturday to take on South Carolina.
