Texas A&M DB Leon O'Neal Signs With CFL's Saskatchewan Roughriders

Leon O'Neal will be playing football again in 2023 with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Former Texas A&M safety Leon O'Neal is set to "Wake'Em Up" in the Canadian Football League come 2023.

According to the Saskatchewan Roughriders' Twitter account, O'Neal has signed with the club for the upcoming season. The details of the contract have yet to be finalized as of this time.

A fan favorite among the 12th Man fan base, O'Neal was a three-year starter for the Aggies from 2019-21. In his final year with the program, the 6-1, 210-pound defensive back finished fourth in tackles (58) and totaled five pass breakups along with an interception returned for a touchdown in the season-opening win over Kent State.

O'Neal played in 40 games for the Aggies from 2018-21. He finished with 161 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 12 pass deflections, six interceptions, a sack and a fumble recovery. In 2020 and 2021, O'Neal recorded a pair of interceptions and at least three pass breakups.

Undrafted in 2022, O'Neal signed as a free agent with the San Francisco 49ers. He suffered a groin injury during training camp and was later waived by the franchise before the start of the preseason after agreeing to terms on an injury settlement.

A native of Cypress, O'Neal chose Texas A&M coming out of Cy Springs High School over programs such as Alabama, Clemson, LSU, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Texas and USC. He also was named the Aggies Heart Award, which is presented to a senior who has completed his eligibility and "displays the intangibles such as effort, desire, determination, competitiveness, accountability, leadership and courage, as voted by his teammates."
