Aggies Freshman WR Micah Tease Arrested On Drug Charges
Texas A&M football will more than likely be without one of its better young receivers for Saturday's season opener against New Mexico.
Freshman wideout Micah Tease was arrested Friday on charges of possession of a controlled substance and a separate charge of less than two ounces of marijuana, according to the Brazos County Jail website.
Tease has since been released on bail after posting a $10,000 bond for the first charge and a $3,000 bond for the second charge, bringing the total to $13,000. He has been supsended indefinitely per the athletic department policy following an arrest, according to an athletic department spokesperson.
The news was first reported by the Houston Chronicle.
Police said a resident of West Park apartments called Thursday evening around 9:30 p.m. to report the residents above him were talking about smoking marijuana. The responding officers said they could smell marijuana when they arrived on site and asked if they could enter the property to conduct a search.
After obtaining a search warrant, police found three THC edibles that weighed a combined 48.1 grams in Tease's room. They also found useable marijuana in his bathroom trashcan that weighed 0.051 ounces.
Texas A&M University Police announced on August 16 that it would no longer arrest students on non-violent charges found with two oz. of marijuana or fewer. However, Tease was also charged with four to 400 grams of a controlled substance, a second-degree felony that is punishable between two to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
Tease, an early enrolee from Tulsa, Okla., made headlines after working up the depth chart through reps at spring practice. In the annual Maroon and White Game, Tease caught a 65-yard touchdown pass from redshirt sophomore Max Johnson to give the White team an early 7-3 lead.
A&M coach Jimbo Fisher said Tease and fellow freshman Raymond Cottrell would be essential to the offense entering the new season under first-year coordinator Bobby Petrino.
"They're physical," Fisher said following the spring game in April. "They're willing to block and do things. They're going to be special teams players. Those guys have really come on, in my opinion, and surged."
Senior receiver Ainias Smith praised Tease for his work ethic and grit in practice that translated over to the field.
"The tenacity that he brings to want to learn inside the meeting rooms is very impressive to me," Smith said. "Both him and Ray. They come in wanting to help the team. With them coming in right now has benefitted them of course, to get the eyes on them."
A four-star recruit from Booker T. Washington High School and the No. 3 prospect in the state of Oklahoma, Tease finished his high school career with 92 catches for 1,982 yards and 24 touchdowns. He initially committed to Arkansas but switched his pledge to A&M during Early Signing Period.
Starting quarterback Conner Weigman will still have options in the passing game, including Smith, sophomore Evan Stewart, and junior Moose Muhammad at receiver, and senior Max Wright at tight end.
A&M will be without fellow starting tight end Donovan Green, who suffered a season-ending ACL tear last month during the team's scrimmage.
Kickoff against the Lobos is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Kyle Field.
