Texas A&M RB Devon Achane, Two DBs To Represent Aggies At NFL Combine
Texas A&M Aggies running back Devon Achane broke onto the scene for the program in 2022 as a focal point of the offense. Now, he'll look to prove he's more than just speed at Lucas Oil Stadium later this month.
Achane was one of three players invited to the 2023 NFL Combine in Indianapolis, Ind., beginning on Feb. 28. Defensive back Antonio Johnson and Jaylon Jones were also invited to the week-long event.
Johnson might have the best chance to boost his stock in front of general managers and coaches. A fringe first-round talent, the junior defensive back garnered praise from scouts thanks to his versatility and adaptability in coverage. Last season, Johnson registered 71 tackles, five tackles for loss and a sack.
Jones, a three-year starter for the Aggies, likely will hear his name called somewhere between Days 2 and 3. Jones totaled 98 tackles, 12 pass breakups, and three interceptions during his time under both Mike Elko and D.J. Durkin. He also started at least 10 games in both 2021 and 2022.
Achane is the wild card of the group. A native of Houston, the 5-10 runner was best known as a change-of-pace player behind Isaiah Spiller during his first two seasons. Despite winning the Orange Bowl MVP against North Carolina in 2020, Achane never recorded more than 130 rush attempts per year.
Last season, Achane proved his size wouldn't deteriorate his play in terms of durability. He posted career-highs in carries (196) and rushing yards (1,102) while averaging 5.6 yards per attempt.
The NFL invited 319 players to the combine, which runs from Feb. 28-March 6. Last season, the Aggies sent nine players to Lucas Oil Stadium, including two-time All-American offensive lineman Kenyon Green.
Green, a three-year starter for the Aggies, was selected 15th overall by the Houston Texans last April, becoming the first Texas A&M player since Myles Garrett in 2017 to be selected in the first round.
