Texas A&M QB Conner Weigman Among Heisman Betting Favorites For 2024
Conner Weigman is expected to be the answer for Texas A&M at quarterback in 2024 after what was expected to be a breakout season last fall.
Perhaps more than a breakout comes to College Station with the redshirt sophomore at the helm.
According to FanDuel, Weigman has the 10th-best odds to win the Heisman Trophy next season at +2000. The Aggies starter was one of eight SEC quarterbacks listed in the top 12.
Weigman won the starting job over Max Johnson coming out of fall camp after establishing himself as a rising star toward the end of the 2022 campaign. As a true freshman, the Cypress (Texas) native threw for 896 yards and eight touchdowns in five games. Weigman did not have a turnover during his four starts.
A foot injury suffered in Week 4's win over Auburn sidelined Weigman for the remainder of the regular season as the Aggies marched to a 7-6 finish amid the firing of Jimbo Fisher. He would undergo surgery and often be seen on the sidelines using a roller.
In four starts, Weigman completed 68.9 percent of his passes for 979 yards and eight touchdowns against two interceptions. His best game came in the season-opener against New Mexico when he completed a career-best 78.2 percent of throws for 278 yards and five touchdowns.
The quarterback position could be an open competition under first-year coach Mike Elko. Transfer Jaylen Henderson started the final three regular season games and the bowl game against Oklahoma State. He impressed in a limited capacity, throwing for 715 yards and six touchdowns while rushing for 104 yards and two scores.
The Aggies also added in four-start and the New Jersey Gatorade Player of the Year Miles O'Neill as part of their 2024 recruiting class, though O'Neill could redshirt to save a season of eligibility. Freshman Marcel Reed replaced Henderson in the bowl game following the opening drive and dazzled, throwing for 361 yards while tacking on a score with his legs.
Australian Punter Verbally Commits to Texas A&M
Texas' Quinn Ewers and Georgia's Carson Beck are the offseason co-favorites to win the award at +750. Ewers guided the Longhorns to their first Big 12 title since 2009 and a College Football Playoff berth. Beck led Georgia to an undefeated regular season and a 13-1 finish with an Orange Bowl victory over Florida State.
Alabama's Jalen Milroe (+1200), Tennessee's Nico Iamaleava (+1500), LSU's Garrett Nussmeier (+1800), Oklahoma's Jackson Arnold (+1800) and Ole Miss' Jaxson Dart (+1800) were the other SEC quarterbacks listed ahead of Weigman. Missouri's Brady Cook (+300) was the only other passer listed from the SEC among the top 20.
The Aggies open the 2024 season at Kyle Field against Notre Dame on Aug. 31.
