Texas A&M Coaching Search: Aggies Targeting Dan Campbell?
Texas A&M has very famously and expensively parted ways with Jimbo Fisher, and the search continues for his replacement. Several big names have been thrown out as potential candidates, but most everyone is remaining silent about any potential interest in coming to College Station.
Former Aggies tight end Dan Campbell is no exception.
Per CBS Sports, Texas A&M initiated "backchannel communications" in reaching out to Campbell to coach the Aggies. Per the report, Campbell made it very clear he would be staying in Detroit.
Campbell is a logical target given his history with the Aggies and his current success with the Detroit Lions. Campbell played tight end in College Station from 1995 through 1998 before being drafted in the third round, No. 78 overall, by the New York Giants in the 1999 NFL Draft.
In 48 games played in that span, Campbell caught 27 passes for 314 yards and three touchdowns as mostly a reserve player. The Clifton, Texas native then played 10 seasons in the NFL, split between the Giants, Dallas Cowboys, and Detroit Lions.
Why would a successful NFL coach be drawn to a top college job? Money.
Campbell is currently drawing around $4 million annually off a six-year deal signed in 2021. That's beans for a college coach at a top program. Remember, A&M just paid Jimbo $70-plus million just to go away. There's no word on whether the Lions will up Campbell's pay to make it closer to what the Aggies would've paid, but you can bet there was a conversation there between Campbell and the Fords.
