Aggies Conner Weigman, Evan Stewart Named to ESPN True Freshman All-America Team
The college football season is over for the 5-7 Texas A&M Aggies and after a disappointing season with no bowl game, the only positives left are individual accolades in Aggieland.
ESPN released its true freshman All-America team on Wednesday with college football analysts Tom VanHaaren and Tom Luginbill making their choices for the top freshmen in the country.
Aggies freshman quarterback Conner Weigman was one of two signal-callers selected alongside Temple's EJ Warner. A&M wideout Evan Stewart was one of three pass-catchers to make the team.
Here is the analysis from VanHaaren
I agree with Luginbill about Warner, but to throw a different name out there, I would include Weigman. One of the top quarterbacks in the 2022 class, Wiegman didn't start the entire season, but played in five games and threw for 896 yards, eight touchdowns and no interceptions. With Haynes King transferring, Weigman is the likely starter for next season and should be able to build on what he did this season.
Stewart was one of five five-star signees in the Aggies' 2022 class. He was the No. 13 prospect overall and the No. 2 receiver in the class. The Texas A&M offense had its struggles this season, averaging 22.8 points per game, second fewest in the SEC, but Stewart has lived up to the hype. He led the team in receiving yards (649) and also had two receiving touchdowns, tied for third most on the team.
Weigman didn't start the entire year, so his selection is noteworthy after entering the South Carolina game late for an injured King. Weigman almost brought the Aggies back and attempted a pass into the end zone on the final play of the game before a 30-24 loss.
Stewart, on the other hand, was a starter from the first week of the season and registered a couple of 100-yard games against Alabama and Florida. Stewart led the SEC in yards per game, receptions, and total yardage.
