The New SEC: Old Aggies Rivalries Renewed
The recent announcement that Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners will leave the Big 12 for the SEC brought shockwaves across college football.
That was supposed to happen in 2025. Now that move has been pushed up a year to July 1, 2024. That's good for the SEC. And with a new SEC comes the potential for new rivalries within the schedule.
The writers at 247Sports recently discussed the possibility of new rivals within the conference, and the Aggies will obviously face an old foe in the Longhorns. But the Sooners are coming too. And while the Aggies haven't faced Oklahoma nearly as many times as Texas, it also will be somewhat of a renewed rivalry.
TEXAS A&M AGGIES
Predicted new rivals
: Texas, Oklahoma, Mississippi State
This new schedule is not going to shake out well for the Aggies, who are likely tasked with both Texas and Oklahoma every season. Texas and Texas A&M have met in football 118 times dating back to 1894, with Texas winning the most recent meeting that was played in College Station in 2011. The Longhorns hold a 76-37-5 all-time edge in the rivalry series. Jeff Tarpley of GigEm247 reported that Kyle Field would host the first meeting when the rivalry series resumes, meaning the Longhorns could visit College Station in 2024 with the Aggies heading to Austin in 2025. Texas A&M AD Ross Bjork said this month he's not ready to speculate on the potential annual rivalry.
While the Aggies have certainly been more successful than the Longhorns in recent years, Texas still holds the all-time edge, and A&M hopes to even that out.
The rivalry with Oklahoma won't be as historic, but it will be a difficult in-conference game in the upcoming seasons.
