Texas A&M Aggies Taurean York Named Shaun Alexander Freshman Player of the Year Semi-Finalist
To say that Texas A&M Aggies linebacker Taurean York has made an impact for his defense this season would be an understatement.
Coming into Aggieland as a true freshman, the Temple native knew that he'd have his work cut out for him, especially if he wanted to generate instant defense for an already high-powered unit. But so far, that's all he's done.
Through eight games this season, York has tallied 47 tackles on the season — second among Aggie defenders — and 6.5 tackles for loss on a defensive squad leading the conference in the stat.
His talent was instantly recognized by Aggies coach Jimbo Fisher, who praised the freshman for his intangibles.
"[York is] very mature," Fisher said early in the Aggies' season. "He’s a kid that is 18 going on 30, and I say that from a standpoint of how he learned and how he act. He’s a very intelligent guy and a very well-rounded guy ... [he's] a true freshman that can make calls for you.”
Fisher's praise came first, but now, he's being recognized by Maxwell Football Club, being tabbed a semi-finalist for its Shaun Alexander Freshman Player of the Year Award, which is given to "the best freshman in college football."
Former Clemson Tigers quarterback Trevor Lawrence was the inaugural recipient of the award in 2019, earning it for his stellar play during a season that ended in a national championship. From there, it has been awarded every season, with York potentially next on the docket to receive it.
The Aggies might not be in the running for national title this year, but they are looking to build positive momentum for next season and beyond, when they hope they'll become a true SEC contender. And York will play a large role in that.
