GAMEDAY: Texas A&M Football Week 1 vs. New Mexico Staff Predictions

Ahead of the Aggies' first-week matchup against the Lobos, here are the All Aggies' staff picks for the game.
In this story:

Texas A&M Aggies fans, today is gameday.

At 6 p.m. CST, he Aggies will kick off their campaign against the New Mexico Lobos, looking to earn momentum right off the bat.

To do that, they'll need to find their rhythm against a Lobos team that will set its objective at preventing nothing but that, though the number of playmakers the Aggies have could spell trouble for their visiting opponent.

New Mexico will be rolling out a new-look offense, headlined by UAB graduate transfer Dylan Hopkins, but its defense is likely to make or break the game as it attempts to slow down Texas A&M's potential hot start.

The game isn't guaranteed, but odds are the Aggies grab their first win of the season at home. That being said, here are All Aggies' staff predictions for Texas A&M vs. New Mexico:

Matt Galatzan, Publisher:

The Aggies are going to bounce back in 2023, and New Mexico will be the first step in that. The Lobos should be overmatched at every level, and the Aggies should cruise.

Prediction: Texas A&M 38, New Mexico 10

Timm Hamm, Staff Writer:

The Aggies are looking to make a statement to start 2023 and unfortunately for the Lobos, they're not very good. New Mexico might not sniff the Aggies' side of the field until after halftime when many of the A&M starters are resting.

Prediction: Texas A&M 41, New Mexico 10

Casey Smith, Staff Writer:

Aside from a narrow Aggies 28-22 escape in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 2008, the five meetings between Texas A&M and New Mexico have not been close. In the Lobos' last two matchups against Southeastern Conference teams, they have failed to score a point. The problem in New Mexico's 2-10 season in 2022 wasn't its defense, it was an offense that was dead last in total offense and second to last in points per game.

Prediction: Texas A&M 41, New Mexico 10

Cole Thompson, Staff Writer:

It’s going to take several games for Bobby Petrino’s offense to reach full potential. The good news is A&M gets a tune-up game against New Mexico before hitting the road for Coral Gables. Aggies win by at least three TDs.

Prediction: Texas A&M 42, New Mexico 10

Connor Zimmerlee, Staff Writer:

The best time of the year, folks, with college football season once again starting up. For Texas A&M, it has an opportunity to start things off in strong fashion against New Mexico. After a disappointing 5-7 season last year, getting the season going with a dominant win could be exactly what is needed to start righting the ship in College Station.

Prediction: Texas A&M 38, New Mexico 7

Matt Guzman, Staff Writer:

After a careful examination of the Lobos, the Aggies will enter the week one matchup with far more talent. They will return multiple offensive lineman to help protect their second-year quarterback, who is fixing to have a much better season than last with a year under his belt, and are welcoming multiple new weapons at receiver and running back. The Lobos have some strong defenders to help slow down the Aggies, but they won't be able to fully stop them, which will ultimately lead to their downfall on Kyle Field.

Prediction: Texas A&M 49, New Mexico 13
