Since then, the Aggies have been trying to replace him.

Recently, rumors swirled about the possibility of Alabama's athletic director Greg Byrne making the move to College Station from Tuscaloosa. In a statement made on Wednesday, Byrne shot down those rumors and indicated he doesn't even know where they would have originated.

“Obviously I know there’s connections with my dad having been the AD there,” Byrne said. “My parents still live there. But I don’t want to be the AD anywhere but Alabama.”

Byrne said he doesn't have an agent and he hasn't put his name anywhere in the news as a candidate.

The only connection between Byrne and the Aggies is his father, Bill, who was a longtime administrator in college and served as athletic director at Texas A&M from 2003-2012.

When Bjork left the Aggies, he left a vacancy at one of the richest programs in the country and a job that most would want to fill. Bjork also served as the athletic director at Ole Miss from 2012-2019.

Not long after Bjork's departure, A&M named former head coach R.C. Slocum - the program's winningest coach - to serve as the interim athletic director. Slocum filled the same position in 2019 in between the tenures of Scott Woodward and Bjork.

"Coach Slocum has been a champion for Texas A&M on and off the field for more than 50 years," Texas A&M president Mark A. Welsh said in a release. "His passion for this university, knowledge of Aggie athletics and commitment to the success of our student-athletes are second to none, and I’m grateful for his willingness to once again step into this interim role."
