Top-Notch Texas A&M Roster Destined For 'Boom'
It's a new year in College Station.
After the Texas A&M Aggies suffered their first losing season since 2009, there's been a lot of doubts about what the program is capable of next season. However, On3's J.D. PicKell isn't buying into the debacle Texas A&M displayed last year, putting the Aggies on his "boom watch" list for the Southeastern Conference for 2023 due to the players on their roster.
"If you're telling me it's Jimbo Fisher's fault, you're likely telling me there's a problem with the recipe, not a problem with the ingredients," PicKell said on "The Hard Count" Thursday. "The ingredients are solid. I love Conner Weigman. I love Evan Stewart. Having Ainias Smith back is huge. They got a lot a lot of ingredients on this roster."
PicKell's "boom watch" list consists of teams he thinks are going to have a double-digit-win season — something the Aggies have only done once this millennium — or "factor in the conference championship race if not win the conference championship," a feat Texas A&M has not accomplished since 2012.
PicKell said the Aggies' ingredients of "as many four- or five-stars as just about everybody else they're going to play in the country" will work well with the fact they're "working to change the recipe" with the hiring of offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino.
"If they put it together, they're going to be a team I think competes in the SEC, and they're going to put a dent in the College Football Playoff race," PicKell said. "Because look at who they play. They play Tennessee. They play Alabama. They're going to have a chance to make some real noise in this playoff conversation at very least as to the impact they have on it. Now, whether they compete for the College Football Playoff or not, who knows? But I'm telling you, the roster, itself, is enough to be very, very dangerous when it comes to 2023 season."
