Texas A&M's Jimbo Fisher on 2022 Recruiting Class: 'They're Going To Play!'

The Texas A&M Aggies brought in the No. 1 recruiting class in 2022, and after a year of development, coach Jimbo Fisher thinks the young core is ready to have a breakout season.
In this story:

It's difficult for an 18-year-old to make the transition physically and mentally to college football. That's not to mention that they're joining the Southeastern Conference.

Not every member of the Texas A&M Aggies' historic 2022 recruiting class had the opportunity to start from the get-go like wide receiver Evan Stewart. Most of them waited their turn last season, but now they will get the opportunity to make the leap into starting roles.

“They are right in the middle of it. A lot of them are starting," coach Jimbo Fisher told 247Sports. "They are all going to play. There aren’t any guys in there that we didn’t want. They’re doing a great job of fitting in and being ready to play. They have developed very well."

Texas A&M brought in one of the best recruiting classes the modern recruiting era has seen two cycles ago, boasting 16 four-star and eight five-star recruits — including the No. 2 player in the country in defensive lineman Walter Nolenaccording to 247Sports.

Stewart played a big role with the Aggies last season leading them in receiving, and quarterback Conner Weigman started four of the last five games of the season. Weigman played well throwing eight touchdowns to no interceptions, and notched a huge victory against LSU to end the season.

Weigman is the poster child for Aggies sophomores ready to take the reins this season, headlining eight potential starters from the 2022 recruiting class.

Though there's a big difference in the pace of play in a game versus in practice, Fisher said it was critical that those players got the experience of competing against other college-level players last season.

Fisher said the Aggies are deep at each position.

"We are two deep," Fisher said. "You got all those young guys that played, and you bring the other guys back. We’re in a better position, not from a talent standpoint but from an experience standpoint. We know how to coach them better.”

If the Aggies' young core can rally in their second year and play up to their top-end potential, the rest of the SEC might want to keep tabs on this Texas A&M team.
