Aggies Coach Jimbo Fisher 'Not Going To Get Into' Bobby Petrino Play Calling Question

The Texas A&M Aggies welcome new offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino for the 2023 season, but will he call the plays in the upcoming year?
In this story:

The question on who will call plays in the fall still has yet to be answered.

The Texas A&M Aggies hired Bobby Petrino in the offseason whose offenses have widely been successful in years past. Whether Petrino was brought in to take over play-calling duties was not answered by head coach Jimbo Fisher when asked at Southeastern Conference Media Days in Nashville Monday.

"I'm not going to get into what we're doing and how we're doing it," Fisher said. "I'm not trying to avoid anything, but I just don't want to create advantages, create narratives out there as to what goes on."

Fisher said Petrino was hired "for a reason," though.

"He's a tremendous coach and a tremendous guy, a tremendous football mind, tremendous recruiter. He's done a great job recruiting since he's been there," Fisher said. "Hopefully, he'll call the game. He'll have some suggestions on things we do, whether it's offense-defense."

Texas A&M's offense ranked 101st in scoring offense and 93rd in total offense last season with Fisher calling plays.

Fisher declined to comment when asked if the Aggies offense would be more under center or with Petrino's four-wide spread offense. He said regardless of what Texas A&M's offensive scheme consists of, the important thing for the Aggies is to get the ball in the hands of "the right playmakers."

Fisher said "every coach is always involved" and "a more collective" effort in building a game plan.

"When you get to calling and you get on a roll, you got to have a guy that can do it," Fisher said. "Bobby can definitely do that. He does it as well as anybody in college football."
