Aggies Offense Thrives Under Bobby Petrino
The Texas A&M Aggies obliterated the New Mexico Lobos on Saturday night 52-10 with an offensive performance that would've made the 2022 Aggies offense proud. That's mainly because the 2022 edition of Jimbo Fisher and Co. couldn't do it.
Saturday night, the new-look Bobby Petrino-led offense posted 52 points and 411 total yards. Last season, the Aggies ranked No. 101 in offense with just 361.2 yards per game and scored just 22.75 points per contest.
Something we'd hoped to see from quarterback Conner Weigman last season finally appeared on Saturday, and that's his aggressiveness. His ability to throw deep on occasion with accuracy. At this point, we're not sure if that's part of Petrino's offense specifically, or just part of the offense's proficiency for cutting Weigman loose. But it doesn't matter. It worked.
The Aggies owned the tempo of the game, moving the ball with Weigman's arm and controlling the clock with an effective running game, although A&M held the ball for almost 10 fewer minutes than the Lobos.
The bottom line is, that the Aggies did exactly what they were supposed to do. Dominate an inferior opponent at home in Week 1. And that's something that seems to have escaped them in recent seasons. And don't think we've seen the whole playbook, either.
The Aggies travel to Miami next week to take on the Hurricanes, a team that's on a different level talent-wise than the New Mexico Lobos. That will be more of a test for Weigman and the Aggies - a team closer to their own talent level, and a road game.
Sept. 9 will give us a much better idea of where this offense is and don't be surprised if we see another fantastic showing by coach Jimbo Fisher, Weigman, Petrino, and the rest of the Aggies' gang.
