Texas A&M Aggies Receivers Coach Dameyune Craig Will Not Return Under Mike Elko
Texas A&M will need to find a new wide receivers coach for the 2024 season.
First-year coach Mike Elko will not retain longtime Jimbo Fisher assistant and current receivers coach Dameyune Craig following the 2023 campaign. Craig’s wife, Neke Craig, recently posted to Instagram that Dameyune would not be a part of A&M's program following a six-year stay in College Station.
“God’s blessings have been excessive and overly abundant when it comes to our family,” Neke Craig wrote. “When we moved to College Station I prayed for 3 ½ years. I wanted to get (my son) Drake through high school without moving again. He gave us 6 years!
“I just hope the young men Dameyune coached know that they are loved and appreciated. They will always be (a part) of our family. I’m excited to see what God has in store for us. I know it’s going to be amazing. #gratefulforitall”
Craig, 49, served multiple roles while on Fisher's staff beginning in 2017. He began his career as the Aggies' receiver coach but later moved to quarterback coach for the 2022 season.
Once Bobby Petrino was hired to replace Darrell Dickey as offensive coordinator, Craig moved back to receivers coach for the 2023 season. Before arriving in College Station, Craig served on Fisher's staff at Florida State as a quality control coach in 2017 and previously worked as the Seminoles quarterbacks coach from 2010-2012.
Craig had a longstanding relationship with Fisher before he arrived in Tallahassee. While at Auburn, Fisher served as Craig's quarterback coach under Terry Bowden from 1994-97.
Mostly known for his recruiting skills, Craig was able to land countless top-notch pass-catchers to join the program during his time on Fisher's staff, including Ainias Smith (2019), Demond Demas (2021), Evan Stewart (2022) and Chris Marshall (2022). Craig helped secure the verbal commitment of five-star Cameron Coleman from Phenix City (Ala.) this past recruiting cycle.
The development of players under Craig was a struggle. During Fisher's near-six full seasons, no pass-catcher totaled more than 872 receiving yards in a single season. Demas and Marshall also transferred from the program within two years after their arrival.
Aggies To Hire Duke's Mike Elko As Jimbo Fisher's Replacement
According to multiple reports, Elko is not expected to retain Petrino as his offensive coordinator. Elko, who went 16-9 during his two seasons at Duke, said Monday during his introductory press conference that it will be a "priority" to retain interim coach Elijah Robinson in some capacity on his new staff.
Robinson, who took over after Fisher was fired earlier this month, will coach the Aggies in their bowl game next month.
