In this story:

At long last, Week 1 of the Texas A&M Aggies' 2023-24 football season is here.

It was a long wait for Aggie fans, especially after last season saw a disappointing crew post a 5-7 record, which was embarrassing by Aggie standards. That record put coach Jimbo Fisher on the proverbial hot seat, regardless of what A&M higher-ups claim, largely due to the expectations that came from having one of the nation's top recruiting classes.

To turn things around, the Aggies need a fast, impressive start to this season, and it all starts on Saturday against the New Mexico Lobos. Unfortunately for the Lobos, they're not very good. Coming off a 2-10 record a season ago, the outlook might not be much better this year. The pressure is on coach Danny Gonzales, and the few new faces for the Lobos bring a certain level of cautious optimism.

Cotton TAMU-1

The Aggies are full of talent up and down the roster, led by second-year quarterback Conner Weigman. Weigman will be targeting junior Ainias Smith, who has posted 21 starts and 1.321 receiving yards in his collegiate career. On the other side, sophomore Evan Stewart could give the Lobos fits defensively. In eight starts last year, Stewart posted 649 yards receiving and two touchdowns.

This game could get out of hand early, and if so, watch for some younger players to get playing time. Kickoff from Kyle Field is set for 6 p.m. CST on ESPN.

Live updates will appear below at kickoff.

Q1 8:10 | After an electric new entrance made by the Aggies, New Mexico won the coin toss and elected to receive, looking to set the tone early.

What was almost a three-and-out, however, turned into a short drive highlighted by a 21-yard pass completion from senior Dylan Hopkins. Fortunately for the Aggies, that drive stalled out after back-to-back tackles for loss, and fifth-year Ainias Smith fielded a punt deep in his own territory to set the Aggies up for their first offensive drive.

LOBOS PUNT: Texas A&M 0, New Mexico 0

Q1 5:00 | A series of defensive penalties added insult to injury for the seemingly outmatched New Mexico defenders. A facemask and pass interference call only gave the Aggies better field position, and they capitalized rather quickly.

Stewart lost the ball on his longest gain of the drive, but a heads up play from Smith set up Texas A&M for a 15-yard Noah Thomas score two plays later.

AGGIES TOUCHDOWN: Texas A&M 7, New Mexico 0

Q1 1:30 | Hopkins continues to impress for the Lobos, with only two incompletions through two drives, but the Aggies' defense continued to swarm the run and force New Mexico into short gains.

A holding penalty didn't help matters, either, which put the Lobos in a third-and-long situation for the first time of the game. Nineteen yards proved to be too many for the Lobos, and Smith added 15 yards to Texas A&M's field position after taking a hit on the catch to set the Aggies up with a short field.

LOBOS PUNT: Texas A&M 7, New Mexico 0

END Q1 | The first fourth-down attempt of the night went to the Aggies, who were forced into a "go-for-it" situation after a series of incompletions and short run gains.

A quick give to Evan Stewart resulted in a first down pick-up and Texas A&M will have a fresh set of downs after the break.

AGGIES BALL: Texas A&M 7, New Mexico 0

Q2 14:53 | One play into the second period of the game, and the Aggies are back on the board. Aggies quarterback Conner Weigman is set to be the face of Texas A&M's offense under first-year coordinator Bobby Petrino, and showed exactly that once again.

Evan Stewart got open, and Weigman did the rest, giving him a bread-basket ball in the endzone for his first of the night and Weigman's second.

AGGIES TOUCHDOWN: Texas A&M 14, New Mexico 0

Q2 10:32 | On the longest rushing play of the night for the Lobos, Jacory Croskey-Merritt took a handoff to the house behind stellar blocking to give New Mexico its first points of the night.

Before the play, the Aggies' defense had allowed just 13 rushing yards in nine attempts, but after the score, New Mexico's total is up to 40. Aggies will have the ball next with a chance to respond.

LOBOS TOUCHDOWN: Texas A&M 14, New Mexico 7

Q2 8:03 | If you had asked Conner Weigman what his plans were on the sidelines following New Mexico's first score of the game, he'd likely have told you they were to score.

In just seven plays, he did just that, launching another deep touchdown to Thomas, marking his third and Thomas' second of the night. Now, the defense will look to make sure the Lobos' score stays at seven.

AGGIES TOUCHDOWN: Texas A&M 21, New Mexico 7

Q2 7:32 | Three straight incompletions from Hopkins stalled out the Lobos on their fourth possession of the night, and a long punt return from Ainias Smith sets up the Aggies with another short field.

Weigman and company will now have their fourth chance at scoring a touchdown, looking to remain perfect this half.

LOBOS PUNT: Texas A&M 21, New Mexico 7

Q2 5:30 | Thirty-eight yards didn't seem to phase Weigman or the Aggies' offensive line, as Texas A&M looked to the run on four straight plays to earn their fourth score of the night.

No one running back has set himself apart from the others, as all three of Amari Daniels, Le'Veon Moss and Reuben Owens have seen touches so far this half. Moss just got the honors of being the first to also see the endzone. Lobos ball next.

AGGIES TOUCHDOWN: Texas A&M 28, New Mexico 7

Q2 3:27 | After scoring four straight times on offense, Texas A&M's defense got its moment in the spotlight. A third-and-long situation for the Lobos forced Hopkins into a back-footed throw that resulted in an Aggies' interception.

Once again, Texas A&M has a short field and is now looking to score on its fifth-straight drive.

AGGIES INTERCEPTION: Texas A&M 28, New Mexico 7

Q2 2:43 | Almost like clockwork, a Weigman to Thomas connection lead to another Texas A&M score. Five plays was all it took for the second-year quarterback to find his new favorite target.

Aggies make it a perfect 5-5 on offense, while Thomas notches his third touchdown catch and Weigman his fourth passing score. Lobos will once again look to respond.

AGGIES TOUCHDOWN: Texas A&M 35, New Mexico 7

Q2 0:43 | Not much was accomplished for the Lobos on their sixth try of the night, as the Aggies forced a quick 3-and-out to get the ball back with under a minute left.

Any little bit of New Mexico momentum that existed prior to that drive was diminished quickly after, and now the Aggies look to add onto their first-half lead.

LOBOS PUNT: Texas A&M 35, New Mexico 7

HALFTIME | Aggies run out of time to put together a red-zone possession, and end it with a blocked kick from Randy Bond as the clock hits zeros.

Fortunately for Texas A&M, it will receive the second-half kick after losing the coin toss, giving coach Jimbo Fisher in a good spot to come out of the gate hot once again.

AGGIES MISSED FG: Texas A&M 35, New Mexico 7

Q3 13:47 | For the first time of the evening, Texas A&M couldn't quite get things going on offense.

A couple of backwards plays coalesced in a Weigman sack, which forced the Aggies into a punt. Now, the Lobos have another shot at building momentum.

AGGIES PUNT: Texas A&M 35, New Mexico 7

Q3 6:09 | Despite a momentum boost led by Hopkins on a 13-play, seven-minute drive, the Lobos couldn't quite finish the job on offense.

New Mexico's job wasn't all for not, however, as it did notch some points on a field goal to cut the Aggies' lead to 25 points. Aggies now with another chance to extend their lead.

LOBOS FIELD GOAL: Texas A&M 35, New Mexico 10

Q3 3:37 | Make it five on the night for Weigman. After a nine-play drive, Fisher's starter continued to show why he deserved the starting spot on the night.

Multiple back-footed passes and tight gaps told the story of his passing, as the Aggies took full advantage of their red-zone possession, which ended in an Evan Stewart touchdown.

AGGIES TOUCHDOWN: Texas A&M 42, New Mexico 10

END Q3 | A rough return by the Lobos set them up deep in their own territory to close out the third quarter.

Now with possession and a chance to build momentum against the Aggies, New Mexico will need to get something going in order to keep its hopes alive — though that outcome is slim.

LOBOS BALL: Texas A&M 42, New Mexico 10

Q4 12:55 | Max Johnson's first appearance of the game unfortunately for him, did not go well. A three-and-out that began with intentional grounding and ended with a misfired pass told the story for Texas A&M.

Nik Constantinou's punt now sets up the Lobos with a shortened field, as they look to notch points for the third time of the night.

AGGIES PUNT: Texas A&M 42, New Mexico 10

Q4 11:12 | Once again, no luck for the Lobos. A quick drive ends once again in a punt, and the Aggies now have the ball again. Johnson with a chance at redemption.

LOBOS PUNT: Texas A&M 42, New Mexico 10

Q4 7:35 | No Weigman, no problem for Max Johnson. In his second appearance of the game for the Aggies, he found a streaking Moose Muhammad III near the corner.

After the pass hit Muhammad III in stride, the junior did the rest, shedding a couple of defenders en route to the endzone.

AGGIES TOUCHDOWN: Texas A&M 49, New Mexico 10

FINAL | To add icing to the cake, Texas A&M capitalized on yet another New Mexico punt, adding a field goal to its already extensive lead.

Lobos had the ball to finish the game, and let the clock run out in Kyle Field. Aggies improve to 1-0 and look strong on both ends of the field.
