As we approach a new season of college football, rankings remain king. And the king of all rankings? The best college football programs ... ever.

After 85 seasons of AP polls, 247Sports has compiled its list of the AP top 25 greatest programs ever. According to the website, here is the criteria considered for the list:

“...based on a formula developed by College Football News using every final AP Top 25 Poll since 1936.

In other words, AP Poll voters have done the heavy lifting in a subjective compilation of premier programs. The AP’s annual national champion — or No. 1-ranked team — receives 25 points, the No. 2 team gets 24 points, and so on. You will recognize several blue-blood programs in these rankings, but there are a few others that have made noticeable strides in recent years.”

The Aggies ranked No. 21 all-time.

Maybe more interestingly than A&M's overall ranking is where it ranks in all-time wins. The Aggies boast 771 wins, good enough for a tie for No. 23. Tied with who? The football powerhouse of the Washington & Jefferson Presidents, who currently play in Division III in a stadium that seats 3,500 people.

Ahead of the Aggies? Programs like Wittenberg (792 wins), Princeton (857), Penn (872), Harvard (893) and Yale (929). Apparently, those Ivy League schools beat up on each other quite frequently.

Leading the way in all-time wins? The Michigan Wolverines with 989 wins all-time. Aggies fans hope they climb up that ladder a bit this season with a good showing after a miserable 2022.
