Aggies Football Could Rely Heavily on Freshman RB in 2023

Last season the Aggies relied heavily on freshmen to end the year, and it could pay off entering 2023.

The Texas A&M Aggies football team is coming off a couple of disappointing seasons by any standard.

After being eliminated from bowl play last season, the Aggies relied heavily on a few true freshmen, as experience on the field is one of the areas this program has lacked in recent seasons.

Now, as coach Jimbo Fisher prepares for the 2023 season with changes on his staff and changes on the roster, the Aggies will rely heavily again on a few young players, and one could prove to have a breakout season.

Per Josh Pate of 247Sports, fans of A&M football should keep their eyes on true freshman running back Rueben Owens. Pate believes the opportunity ahead of Owens works in his favor.

“I think he will play this year…It’s a situation where they had Devon Achane leave and go to the NFL.”

“It may not be that he has 30 carries in Week 1, that’s not what I’m telling you…What I’m telling you is I think they will, not so subtly, ease him into the rotation and, by season’s end, he very well will be their best tailback.”

Running back Amari Daniels will almost certainly be the starter in Week 1 if for no other reason than his experience in the system. Owens may not make an immediate impact on the offense, but will most likely be fighting for playing time with Le’Veon Moss to begin the year.

Fisher and new offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino should be looking for players with proven stats to begin the year, as we’ve seen what inexperience does to this offense in recent disappointing seasons.

Owens was a five-star RB and the Aggies’ second-highest-ranked signee in the Class of 2023, and his talent on the field is next-level.

After an impressive high school career where he saw more than 7,000 rushing yards and 100 touchdowns, he could be an easy solution when it comes to filling the void left by Devon Achane.

The Aggies’ offense needs to pick up the pace from recent seasons, and that should be accomplished with one of the more talented groups on that side of the ball in the country.

Fisher thinks he has his future quarterback in Connor Weigman and a rising star at wideout in Evan Stewart. Owens seemingly could join the mix the future lead tailback, bringer brighter to Aggieland in the not-so-distant future.
