Texas A&M Spring Football: Aggies Projected 2023 Depth Chart

The Texas A&M 2023 recruiting class includes a ton of talent, and could be a springboard to a bounce-back season for the Aggies.
In this story:

Texas A&M finished last season 5-7 after one of the more disappointing seasons in recent memory, and one of the worst in the Jimbo Fisher era.

All that after boasting what was called the best recruiting class ever. We're a long way from that 2022 recruiting class, as significant players have moved on via the transfer portal.

But the 2023 class includes a ton of talent, and it could be a springboard to a bounce-back season for the Aggies.

That all depends on who's starting. Let's take a look at the offense and who might step in for what we hope is an exciting and successful A&M season.

OFFENSIVE LINE

The Aggies have a ton of experienced options here as nine players return who started at least one game a season ago. Aki Ogunbiyi is one of those but due to his injury history, he may serve as a backup at multiple positions to lighten his load and risk.

This position group saw a ton of injuries last year so it will be interested to see how this all plays out. But as of today, a suitable lineup would consist of:

LT Trey Zuhn, LG Kam Dewberry, C Bryce Foster, RG Layden Robinson, RT Reuben Fatheree

With backups consisting of Hunter Erb, Jordan Spasojevic-Moko, Matthew Wykoff, Ogunbiyi, and Dametrious Crownover.

TIGHT END

Max Wright is one of the many bright spots for the offense at A&M and has way more experience than Donovan Green, who is entering his second season.

Wright is also a better blocker than Green or the other options. Wright will be the starter with Green seeing quite a bit of playing time too. Second-year players Jake Johnson and Theodor Melin Ohrstrom will see the field more as they gain more experience and trust from the offensive coaches.

RUNNING BACK

Replacing Devon Achane will not be easy. He was easily a top 5 running back in the SEC and is now one of the top-rated at the position in the NFL Draft.

Thankfully, the Aggies have options.

The player on the roster with the most talent is probably Rueben Owens, but he's a freshman. We've seen how inexperience can cripple a player in the SEC regardless of raw talent.

But Le'Veon Moss and Amari Daniels are also in the running and have plenty of talent themselves. Based on experience alone, look for Daneils to start the season as RB1, but Owens to take over at some point as the starter.

WIDE RECEIVER

Noah Thomas saw limited playing time in 2022 and is still somewhat learning to play wideout after playing mostly defensive back in high school. But he has the skills. Evan Stewart is a do-it-all wideout who can catch just about any pass to any part of the field. The experience he gained last season just made him that much better.

Moose Muhammad showed his true value after the injury to Ainias Smith last year and has a knack for finding open spots on the field. And speaking of Ainias Smith, he'll play into the equation at wideout after removing his name from consideration for the NFL Draft back in February. Jalen Preston is also returning for A&M in 2023.

Your starting three will look something like this: Ainias Smith, Moose Muhammad, Evan Stewart. And anyone listed as a backup should be prepared to play any of the three receiver positions for offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino: Noah Thomas, Raymond Cottrell, Preston, and Tyrin Smith.

QUARTERBACK

Max Johnson has more experience than Conner Weigman, but this might be one of the few exceptions where the younger, less experienced player wins out.

Weigman is everything Haynes King was supposed to be, but wasn't. He's got the arm to make the throws and the legs to extend plays when necessary. He's the present and the future.

Johnson will be at worst, the best backup quarterback in the SEC, and if something happens to Weigman, the Aggies should be in good hands.
