Buzz Williams Reveals Why Texas A&M Has 'Competitive Advantage'
After last night's 63-57 win in the Reed Arena, the Texas A&M Aggies are 3-3 in SEC play.
Despite a 28.8 percent field goal percentage, A&M secured a victory through cohesive team efforts and efficient free throw shooting, converting 27 attempts during the game. Aggie stars Wade Taylor, Henry Coleman, and Tyrece Radford also each provided sufficient offense.
And head coach Buzz Williams likes what he is seeing out of his team.
"We're doing better at getting to the line over the last week and a half we need to continue to get to the line maybe even a little bit more at a little bit higher rate," said Williams. "Last year we made 75 percent as a team in SEC play... Prior to tonight we were shooting 68 percent we've got to get that north of 70% and so we've changed a few things in how we spend 10 or 12 minutes."
Williams also emphasized the team's success in outrebounding the opponent by 10 in the second half, particularly limiting them to just one offensive rebound. According to Williams, this aspect played a crucial role in differentiating the teams.
The offense worked in tandem with the distinctive Williams defense. Defensively, the Aggies managed to score 15-plus points off turnovers, a feat attributed by Williams to recent changes he deemed "really good." He credits the minor adjustments in free throws and defense for the recent victories, even in the face of the road loss to Arkansas.
Preview: Texas A&M Takes on Missouri In Critical SEC Tilt
"I don't think that we're the best team. I don't think I'm the best coach. I don't think we have the best players," Williams said. "But you could argue that we have a competitive advantage in regards to being in difficult situations that require you to be your best physically mentally and emotionally and to some degree uh because of how we practice and those games they don't flinch."
Up next for the Aggies, will be a home tilt against Chris Beard and the Ole Miss Rebels on Saturday at Reed Arena.
And Williams will likely hope to draw on the Aggies 'competitive advantage' once again against the 15-3 Rebels.
