Aggie Baseball: Lack of Consistency Could Spell Trouble in the Postseason

Despite having won five of their last six conference series, the Aggies have yet to find consistent success — especially against ranked opponents — raising concerns about how far they could go in the postseason.

Rounding the home stretch, not much is certain regarding the Texas A&M Aggies

On paper, coach Jim Schlossnagle's squad has had a late-season revival, winning five of their last six SEC series to gain momentum heading into the postseason. Still, despite their recent success, there have been troubling concerns in regard to how legitimate the Aggies actually are.

In other words, the Aggies haven't seemed to be able to establish momentum game-by-game.

Friday afternoon, the Aggies added to their win total, knocking off an Alabama team hot with momentum after ending its series against Vanderbilt with a win.

Texas A&M's win marked a sign of positive momentum of its own heading into the second game of the series, but the concern?

The next day, the Aggies found themselves down to the same team by 11 runs after seven innings — ending the game early and leaving the series up for grabs.

Game three of the series is set for Sunday afternoon, and a win in the series would mark the Aggies' second in a row after taking down No. 4 ranked Florida at home, but a loss would signal a troubling end to the Aggies' undefeated conference series streak against unranked opponents.

Currently, d1baseball.com has Texas A&M placed in the Stillwater regional as a 3-seed, where it would match up against No. 2 seed Dallas Baptist in game one.

While the Aggies' trip to the NCAA tournament seems to be certain, earning wins in the final two conference series' would certainly help their case and give them a big boost of momentum heading into the postseason, but it wouldn't guarantee success — for one main reason.

Overall, Texas A&M is just 5-12 against ranked opponents.

If the placements were finalized today and the Aggies were to knock off Dallas Baptist, they would then go on to face either No. 1 Seed Oklahoma State — the regional host — or a 4-seed Oral Roberts team, but getting past those teams would be just the beginning.

The Aggies have seen flashes of success, but not in a consistent manner, making any games against a nationally ranked team concerning for them. Schlossnagle has seen a wide range of postseason opponents, however, so games could go both ways.

Either way, the Aggies have a long road ahead of them should they want to make a postseason push — including winning games in the SEC tournament — so consistency will be crucial to their success, and fans can only hope they find it.
