Aggies Safety Demani Richardson Tops Senior Safeties Ahead of Fifth Season
For the Texas A&M Aggies, almost any news is good news when it comes to football.
After a disastrous last season, the Aggies are looking to improve both their record and overall performance — likely looking for more than two conference wins.
Luckily for them, safety Demani Richardson, a four-year starter, is planning to make his four years five in Aggieland, and all eyes are on him.
Bleacher Report recently ranked its top seniors at each position ahead of the 2023-24 season, and Richardson sat atop the list of safeties, the site writing of the veteran:
Provided he stays healthy, Richardson will complete his fifth season as a starter in 2023. He's appeared in 44 games and registered 246 career tackles, adding five takeaways and four forced fumbles.
Last year specifically, he served as a team captain and paced the defense with 74 tackles. Richardson also scored two touchdowns, both of which helped the Aggies earn their only two victories in SEC games.
Despite putting up team-leading numbers, however, Richardson still was not quite satisfied with his performance, likely a factor in his decision to return for his fifth year.
"Last year, I played hurt," Richardson said. "It happened [during the] Arkansas game, and lingered on ... I felt like I didn't play at 100 percent. Playing banged up stopped me from reaching my full potential."
Full potential or not, No. 26 was everywhere on defense. He made big-time plays for the Aggies, and has done so since joining the program.
Now, Aggie fans can look forward to seeing Richardson hit the field one more time, though the expectations suddenly got that much higher.
Texas A&M's annual spring game is set for April 15, and will be the first time fans can see the fifth-year Richardson in action. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
