Aggies Make History in Debut of Bobby Petrino Offense
In potentially one of the most dominant and impressive season-openers in school history, the Texas A&M Aggies sent fans home with much to be excited about after a historic performance in the 52-10 win over the New Mexico Lobos.
The first-half offensive explosion saw the Aggies jump out of the gates to a 35-7 lead at halftime after four touchdown passes from starting quarterback Conner Weigman. Weigman, the former five-star prospect out of Cypress, Texas, beat out a more experienced Max Johnson for the starting role and followed it up with career-game.
.Weigman's nine of 12 throwing for 137 yards and four touchdowns in the first half alone made him the first Aggies quarterback to have thrown for four scores in a season-opener this century.
Yet, he didn't stop there as he finished with five touchdowns and 236 yards throwing while completing just under 80 percent of his passes at 78 percent. According to ESPN's Stats and Info department, Weigman's five-touchdown performance against the Lobos made him the first to do so in a season-opener in program history.
Weigman wasn't the only one who made history as the team overall managed to do the same, as the Aggies' 52 points were the most scored they've had in a season-opener since 2018 when they beat Northwestern State 59-7.
The offensive explosion was a far cry from last season's disappointment. New offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino presided over a unit that gained 411 total yards, 277 of which came through the air, with 134 on the ground.
The high-scoring and efficient start to the Petrino era will have fans hoping it can be replicated over the span of the next 11 games as the Aggies hope to bounce back from a disappointing 5-7 season.
