Aggies Rise in Power Rankings Heading into Miami Game
As the Texas A&M Aggies are just under 48 hours away from their first potential marquee matchup of the new season as they travel to Hard Rock Stadium to face the Miami Hurricanes, ESPN recently released their post-Week 1 power rankings after the Aggies started the year with a dominant win over the New Mexico Lobos.
After entering Week 1 at No. 24, the Aggies did enough against the Lobos to rise just two spots in ESPN's power rankings at No. 22 heading into their game versus the Hurricanes.
"The coach Jimbo Fisher-offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino pairing got off to a high-flying start in a 52-10 blowout of New Mexico, giving the Aggies hope that last season's woes that led to a 5-7 season are gone," ESPN writes. "The Aggies scored on their first five possessions, and sophomore QB Conner Weigman had a career-high five touchdown passes, three to Noah Thomas and two to Evan Stewart, who had 8 catches for 115 yards."
The season debut for the Aggies went as well as anyone could've expected. The new-look Texas A&M offense under Bobby Petrino got the season off to a hot start as he guided starting quarterback Connor Weigman to becoming the first Aggies signal-caller ever to toss five touchdown passes. At the same time, the unit as a whole scored the most points in a season-opener since 2018 when they beat Northwestern State 59-7.
While the critics can and will try to chip away at the Aggies' success due to playing a vastly inferior opponent like the Lobos, A&M will have their first test on Saturday against the Hurricanes.
The power ranking from ESPN is just one spot higher than where the Aggies actually landed in the AP Poll, where, despite the blowout win in Week 1, Texas A&M stayed put at No. 23.
Kickoff on Saturday for the Aggies and Hurricanes is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. (CT), as the two teams will meet in Hard Rock Stadium.
