Baseball: TCU Defeats Texas State 8-2 in its Final Midweek Matchup of the Year
The Fort Worth sunset was pretty, but the Horned Frogs' victory was prettier.
TCU took down Texas State in a midweek intrastate showdown that ended with an 8-2 win for Kirk Saarloos' Frogs. TCU extended its winning streak to six games and has now won eight of its last nine.
Braeden Sloan got the start on the mound for the Horned Frogs, pitching for 4.1 innings and allowing the only two Bobcat runs of the day. Those two runs came in the second inning on a two-run blast from Chase Mora, giving Texas State its only lead of the day. TCU took no time to respond, as Anthony Silva hit a two-run shot of his own in the bottom of the second to tie the game at two apiece.
A quiet third inning was followed by action-packed fourth and fifth innings for TCU's offense as Silva scored once again, this time on a wild pitch that got past the catcher in the fourth inning. Brayden Taylor hit an RBI single that sent Luke Boyers to the plate, making it 4-2 in favor of the Frogs.
In the bottom of the fifth, the scoring continued with a pair of RBI singles from Logan Maxwell and Tre Richardson. The two RBIs totaled three runs and gave the Frogs a commanding 7-2 lead.
In the top of the eighth inning, freshman pitcher Ben Abeldt came in for relief as the fourth TCU pitcher. He pitched for just one inning but struck out the side on 17 pitches. The game's final run came in the bottom of the eighth, thanks to an RBI from Kurtis Byrne that made it 8-2. Luke Savage finished up on the mound, securing the win for the Horned Frogs.
The win put TCU at 31-21 on the season. The team finishes up its regular season on the road against Kansas State. The series begins on Thursday, May 18. The game is available to watch on ESPN+.
