Baseball: TCU Falls to Texas State 8-4
Texas State’s 11 hits and 9 walks drawn propelled the Bobcats to an 8-4 victory over the visiting Horned Frogs. TCU has fallen to 9-7 on the year and is just 2-2 in its midweek matchups this season.
The Frogs struck first in San Marcos when freshman Jake Duer registered his first career hit in the second inning, sending Kurtis Byrne home to make it 1-0. That lead would not last long as Texas State responded in the bottom of the third, scoring five runs thanks to three walks by Braeden Sloan, a couple of RBIs and a two-run homerun to center field by Peyton Lewis. Sloan started the game for TCU, but only pitched for 2.1 innings. He finished his short outing with 4 walks and 1 strikeout and allowed 4 runs on 3 hits.
Austin Davis hit a solo shot in the fourth inning to cut the four run deficit to three. Davis has now hit four homeruns this season, including two in the last two games.
Unfortunately for Kirk Sarloos’ club, Texas State’s offense took no time to get back on the board. Mason Speaker, TCU’s first relief pitcher of the evening, was not much better than his predecessor. Speaker allowed 3 runs on 3 hits in just 1.2 innings. A two-run homer in the fourth inning and an RBI double in the fifth gave the Bobcats their biggest lead of the game at 8-2.
The Horned Frogs scored two runs in the ninth inning on a Cole Fontenelle RBI single and a Logan Maxwell sacrifice fly to give the game its final score, 8-4.
After a promising start to the season, TCU has now lost four of its last seven games and sits at 9-7 entering Big 12 play. The Frogs will travel to Norman and play the Sooners on March 17-19 in its first conference series of the season.
First pitch is set for 6pm on Friday evening. You can listen to the game on KTCU radio at 88.7 FM.
