Baseball: TCU to Play Kansas in Round Two

The Frogs bested Kansas State 16-3 in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament

Somewhere, a Jayhawk fan celebrated TCU's 16-3 thumping of Kansas' in-state rival Kansas State. Potentially unfortunately for that fan, it's Kansas' turn to try to halt one of baseball's hottest teams in TCU.

The Big 12 tournament opener between TCU and Kansas State was never close. In fact, it was never close to being close. It took no time for the Horned Frogs to get on the board thanks to a three-run moon shot from Brayden Taylor, his 44th career home run, tying a TCU record set by Royce Huffman in 1999. From there, things only got worse for the Wildcats, who ultimately allowed 17 Horned Frog hits.

Although Kansas' first tournament game against Texas didn't have quite as many fireworks, there were fireworks nonetheless. A seventh inning grand-slam from Janson Reeder broke a 2-2 tie and would prove to be the winning play. The Longhorns got a run back, and the Jayhawks won the game 6-3.

The Horned Frogs swept the Jayhawks in this season's three-game series by a combined score of 40-11. The Frogs have not lost to Kansas since April 25, 2021, and Kansas has not boasted a regular season winning record since that season; everything seems to favor TCU.

But not so fast, says Kansas. The Texas Longhorns were one of the Big 12's few teams who closed the regular season as well as TCU. The 'Horns closed the regular season with an impressive 3-0 sweep of No. 6 ranked West Virginia, while Kansas entered the matchup having lost six of eight. All that to say, it doesn't really matter what happened before the tournament.

The previous matchup between TCU and Kansas ended with a 14-0 victory for the Frogs thanks to a massive 5 RBI game from Anthony Silva. TCU scores the fifth most runs by any team in the Big 12, while Kansas sports the second-worst ERA in the Big 12. The Jayhawks' pitching staff also allows the third most runs in the conference.

The stats don't seem super promising for Kansas, but anything can happen in the postseason, and the Frogs will have to beat a confident Jayhawk team. The two will meet on Thursday at 4 pm, and the game will be televised on ESPNU.
