Big 12 Baseball Tournament: Taylor Named Tournament Most Outstanding Player
Brayden Taylor, TCU’s third baseman, was on fire all week long at the 2023 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship. Defensively, he had many plays worthy of SportsCenter Top 10, as Frogs fans have come to expect from him on the field. Offensively, he put on a show setting off all sorts of fireworks, figuratively and literally.
His performance during TCU’s championship run was enough for him to be named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.
TCU played four teams over the weekend. In those games, Taylor had 16 appearances at the plate and batted .500. He had eight hits, four of which were doubles, and three more were home runs. On Wednesday, he hit his 44th career home run, tying the TCU program record with Royce Huffman (1996-99). On Thursday against Kansas, he blasted another to set the new TCU program record. And in Sunday’s championship game, he had another. The program record is now at 46, possibly more to come before Taylor finishes his season.
Taylor’s eight hits tied him with teammate Karson Bowen for third most during the tournament. OSU’s David Mendham had the most hits of any player in the tournament with 11. TCU’s Kurtis Byrne was second with nine.
Taylor crossed the plate ten times during his four games, the most of any player in the tournament. He also had 11 RBIs, also the most for any player in the tournament. His four doubles, as were his three homers, were also a tournament high. Lastly, he had 21 total bases, which is also the most of any player in the tournament. He had five more bases than Mendham, who had the second most at 16.
Next up: Taylor and his Horned Frogs teammates wait to learn where they will play their Regional. The NCAA Selection Show is Monday, May 29, at 11 am. CT.
