TCU Baseball Adds To Promising Coaching Staff
While the college baseball season has ended, the TCU Baseball coaching staff just got even more coaching experience with the hiring of Dave Lawn. The former assistant head coach has over 30 years of coaching experience, specifically in the pitching coach/recruiting coordinator role in the past.
As of right now, it’s unclear what his main role for the team will be but no matter what, the Frogs already promising coaching staff with Kirk Saarloos, TJ Bruce, and John DiLaura has gotten even better with the addition of Lawn. In his tenure at Arizona, Lawn and the Wildcats made the College World Series twice and the NCAA Baseball Tournament five times in eight seasons. Before he was at Arizona, Lawn began his coaching career at Nevada as a graduate assistant, spent ten years at California, and then seven years at USC.
While the resume for Lawn is impressive, it seems he's even better at producing good draft picks. From 2016-2020, 23 players have gone on to play Major League Baseball. Lawn added to his total recently with five more players under his instruction getting drafted, with Chase Davis going 22nd overall in the 2023 MLB Draft.
Many speculate that Lawn will work primarily with pitchers since the majority of his career has been as a pitching coach. This is good news for the Frogs since young pitchers like Ben Abeldt and Kole Klecker, while already having very good first seasons, could potentially get even better in the 2024 season.
With Lawn joining the Frogs, one thing to look out for going forward is if any pitchers in the transfer portal will follow the former Arizona coach to TCU.
