TCU Baseball Transfer Portal Updates
With the transfer portal being a vital role in any Power 5 school's success these days, it can be a little confusing trying to keep up with who's staying with the Horned Frogs and who's leaving. In this article, we attempt to eliminate the confusion by putting all the transfer portal info in one place. Also included are some players potentially leaving after getting drafted a few weeks ago.
Key Departures (MLB Draft):
- Brayden Taylor
- Cam Brown
- Elijah Nunez
- Tre Richardson
- Garrett Wright
- Ryan Vanderhei
- Cole Fontenelle
- Luke Savage
Incoming Transfers:
Peyton Chatagnier
Peyton Chatagnier is one of the most significant transfers so far, and for a good reason. While his stats at the plate don't shock you, his experience in college baseball is second to none. Chatagnier played a large role in Ole Miss winning the 2022 College World Series and brings tons of leadership to a TCU team that will look to have another exciting season next year.
2023 Stats: AVG- .261, OBP- .343, 10 HR.
Payton Tolle
Payton Tolle is arguably the most exciting transfer the Frogs landed after the 2023 season. Tolle is a two-way player, meaning he both takes the mound and swings the bat. Much like Jac Caglianone with Florida, Tolle was dominant on the mound and a huge offensive weapon at the plate for Wichita State and looks to continue his success at TCU. Not only is he a highly scouted pitching prospect, but he fills the need for some much-needed power for the Frogs after both Brayden Taylor and Cole Fontenelle were drafted a few weeks ago.
2023 Stats: AVG- .311, OBP- .361, 13 HR/ ERA- 4.62, IP- 85.2, SO- 97.
Ben Hampton
Ben Hampton transferred to TCU quickly after the Mountaineers season concluded in 2023 and will be a big addition to an already promising TCU pitching staff in 2024. In the 2023 season, Hampton was the Friday night starter for West Virginia and did well against a strong TCU lineup, only giving up two runs and pitching 6.0 innings. Much like Sam Stoutenborough, Hampton won't be a pitcher that records ten strikeouts a game but can give consistent quality starts for the Frogs in the 2024 season.
2023 Stats: ERA- 4.45, IP- 85, SO- 66.
Jack Basseer
An infielder that many Frogball fans will be excited to see is Pepperdine transfer Jack Basseer. The third baseman had an extremely impressive freshman season at Pepperdine and will look to build a strong relationship with Anthony Silva in the infield.
2023 Stats: AVG- .345, OBP- .418, HR- 5.
Colt Taylor
One of the more interesting commitments for the Horned Frogs after the 2023 season is Colt Taylor. Taylor played in 43 games in two years at Tennessee Tech accumulating 66.1 innings and 49 strikeouts. He started his college career at Moltow State Community College and now has the opportunity to be an intriguing piece of the TCU bullpen in 2024. Unlike many pitchers in D1 baseball, Taylor is a low-velocity pitcher that uses his offspeed stuff to get outs. His role in the TCU bullpen will be one to watch in the 2024 season.
2023 Stats: ERA- 8.15, IP- 35.1, SO- 19.
Exiting Transfers:
David Bishop
One hitter that the Frogs are sad to see go is David Bishop. The 1st baseman most likely would have filled in for Cole Fontenelle this year, both at the position and in the lineup. While Bishop struggled a little at the plate at the beginning of this year, it's more likely that Bishop just got overshadowed by Fontenelle's impressive 2023 year. Bishop put up an impressive freshman year at TCU in 2022, hitting .261 but gradually declined at the plate closer to the end of the season.
2023 Stats: AVG- .214, OBP- .333, HR-6.
Owen Blackledge
Owen Blackledge entered the transfer portal almost a month ago after two years with TCU. The infielder didn't get many opportunities with the Frogs, only getting eight career at-bats over both seasons.
2023 Stats: AVG- .250, OBP- .333.
Justin Hackett
One bullpen arm TCU parts ways with is Justin Hackett, who pitched a total of 6.1 innings in the 2023 season. With pitchers like Luke Savage and Ben Abeldt improving with every outing, it was hard for Hackett to find a place in the TCU bullpen. The righty recently transferred to Iowa for the 2024 season.
2023 Stats: ERA- 11.37, IP- 6.1, SO- 9.
