Big 12 Men’s Basketball Midweek Rundown: Texas Upsets No. 11 Oklahoma

In this week’s midweek games, most of the favored teams did what they were expected to do – win. That wasn’t the case in Norman.

Texas Tech and Baylor were the first teams this year to get a midweek bye. As a result, Texas Tech is now in sole possession of the top spot in the Big 12 standings at 4-1. That gives them a ½ game lead over four teams at 4-2.

With those two teams on a midweek bye, only four of the games featured a ranked opponent. Only one of those, No. 4 Houston at No. 21 BYU, was a ranked versus ranked game. In that game, Houston got the coveted road win, defeating the other Cougars 75-68.

No. 7 Kansas defeated Cincinnati 74-69. And No. 23 defeated Kansas State 78-67. The only ranked team not playing another ranked team to lose was Oklahoma. The No. 11 Sooners lost to Texas 75-60.

In other games, TCU overcame a 17-point first-half deficit to defeat Oklahoma State 74-69 in Stillwater, and UCF easily handled West Virginia 72-59.

The Big 12 is a gauntlet, and this week’s midweek games reflected just that. The parity among the teams is such that any team can beat another team any day, either at home or on the road.

The conference’s NET ranking of 47.6 is the lowest of all leagues. The next lowest are the Big Ten at 63.4 and the SEC at 66.8

The Big 12 leads the nation in ranked teams for the ninth consecutive week (since Nov. 27). Its seven Top 25 teams are more than double any other league. The Jan. 22 rankings are No. 4/4 Houston, No. 7/8 Kansas, No. 11/13 Oklahoma, No. 15/14 Baylor, No. 20/21 Texas Tech, No. 21/19 BYU and No. 23/18 Iowa State. K-State, TCU, and Texas received votes.

The Big 12 has 12 teams in the top 53 of ESPN’s Power Index: 1. Houston, 7. Iowa State, 13. BYU, 14. Baylor, 18. Kansas, 21. TCU, 26. Cincinnati, 27. Texas Tech, 29. Texas, 32. Oklahoma, 43. K-State and 53. UCF. Thirteen teams are in the top 14 for remaining strength of schedule.
