Houston is getting a quick lesson in how tough the Big 12 Conference is. On the second Saturday of conference play, No. 2 Houston and No. 9 Oklahoma, both of which lost road games in their midweek games, lost again on Saturday. Houston lost at TCU 68-67; Oklahoma lost at No. 3 Kansas 78-66.

Avery Anderson III
TCU defeated No. 2 Houston on Saturday 68-67.

Texas Tech also had a one-point win over Kansas State, 60-59. Baylor’s game also came down to the last few seconds, defeating Cincinnati 62-59. UCF gave BYU a scare, making it a one-point game with just over a minute left. West Virginia and Texas also played to the wire, with the Mountaineers winning 76-73.

Of the seven games played on Saturday, only two were determined by more than two possessions – Kansas over Oklahoma (78-66) and Iowa State over Oklahoma State (66-42).

Baylor and Texas Tech are the only teams still undefeated in conference play with three wins.

The Big 12 is a gauntlet, and Saturday’s games reflected just that. The parity among the teams is such that any team can beat another team any day, either at home or on the road.

The conference’s NET ranking of 48.9 is the lowest of all leagues. The next lowest is the Big Ten at 64.1 and the SEC at 66.4.

The Big 12 is the only conference with six of the top 24 and 12 of the top 76 teams in the NET rankings with 1. Houston, 4. BYU, 10. Iowa State, 13. Baylor, 16. Kansas, 25, Oklahoma, 29. TCU, 32. Cincinnati, 37. Texas Tech, 59. Texas, 75. UCF, and 76. Kansas State.
