Big 12 Men’s Basketball Saturday Rundown: K-State, Tech At Top Of Standings
The Big 12 standings, after Saturday's games, are a log jam. Thirteen of the league's 14 teams are either at the top or within two games of the top.
On Saturday, Texas needed a buzzer-beater layup by Tyrese Hunter to get a much-needed win as they beat No. 9 Baylor 75-73.
In Cincinnati, the Bearcats and Sooners played a tight game. They were tied at halftime. No. 15 Oklahoma would lead most of the second half, but Cincinnati would not go away and was within two points with seconds remaining. OU survived to win 69-65.
No. 19 TCU got into a deep hole early against No. 24 Iowa State at home. Down by as many as 19 points in the second half, the Horned Frogs fought back despite 27 turnovers, but the comeback was not enough. Iowa State won 73-72.
The day's biggest upset came in Morgantown as West Virginia defeated No. 3 Kansas. In Lubbock, No. 25 Texas Tech was down 16 points at halftime to No. 20 BYU. The Red Raiders would outscore the Cougars 53-30 in the 2nd half to win 85-78.
Kansas State would also overcome a halftime deficit to sneak out a 70-66 win at home over Oklahoma State, the only team in the league not within two games of the lead.
No. 5 Houston was the only team to get a double-digit win as they easily handled UCF 57-42. The Knights set a new Big 12 record low with a 15.9% shooting percentage.
The Big 12 is a gauntlet, and Saturday's games reflected just that. The parity among the teams is such that any team can beat another team any day, either at home or on the road.
The conference's NET ranking of 47.6 is the lowest of all leagues. The next lowest is the Big Ten at 63.0 and the SEC at 67.71 (After Saturday's games, the Big 12's NET ranking went down slightly, while the Big Ten's and SEC's went up.)
The Big 12 has a Conference record eight teams in the AP and Coaches polls, accounting for almost one-third of the rankings and double the total of the next-closest league. The Big 12 leads the nation in ranked teams for the eighth consecutive week (since November 27). The January 15 rankings are No. 3/4 Kansas, No. 5/5 Houston, No. 9/9 Baylor, No. 15/16 Oklahoma, No. 19/22 TCU, No. 20/19 BYU, No. 24/20 Iowa State and No. 25/25 Texas Tech. Texas received votes.
