March Madness: 15 Men's and Women's Big 12 Teams to Play in NCAA Tournaments
Let the games begin! March Madness has officially arrived. The teams have been selected, the play-in games are underway, and the first-round games begin Thursday.
The Big 12 is well represented in postseason play, both in the men's and women's tournaments.
On the men's side, a record eight teams will play in the NCAA Tournament starting on Thursday. In addition, three other teams were selected for the NIT Tournament.
On the women's side, seven teams will play in the NCAA Tournament starting on Friday. In addition. three other teams were selected either for the inaugural WBIT or the WNIT tournaments.
Big 12 Men's Basketball - Postseason Teams
A Big 12 record and nation-high tying eight teams were selected for the 2024 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship. Those teams are:
- No. 1 seed Houston - South Region
- No. 2 seed Iowa State - East Region
- No. 3 seed Baylor - West Region
- No. 4 seed Kansas - Midwest Region
- No. 6 seed BYU - East Region
- No. 6 seed Texas Tech - South Region
- No. 7 seed Texas - Midwest Region
- No. 9 seed TCU - Midwest Region
The Big 12 has a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament for the fourth consecutive year and 16th season out of 27. Two teams are in the top two seed lines for the ninth occasion, including the third straight year.
Including the eight this season, the Big 12 has made 157 appearances since 1996-97 in the NCAA tournament. The Conference has a record of 102-47 in the previous 149 first round matchups and is 51-51 in 102 second round games.
Heading into postseason play, the Big 12 holds the nation’s best NET average (46.2) and strength of schedule (39.6). The Big 12 is the only league with 10 teams in the top 46 of the NET. The Big 12 has entered the NCAA Championship with the best NET ranking for four consecutive years and nine of the past 11 years.
The Big 12 has captured two national championships in the previous three years with Baylor winning the 2021 title and Kansas bringing home the 2022 trophy. Conference teams have played in four of the past five Final Fours, including three national championship game appearances.
Three other teams were selected for the NIT Tournament:
- No. 2 seed Cincinnati
- No. 4 seed UCF
- Kansas State
The 11 total teams playing in a postseason tournament is a record for the Big 12.
Big 12 Women's Basketball - Postseason Teams
Seven Big 12 women’s basketball teams were selected to compete in the 2024 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship, the most teams from the league selected since 2013 and tied for the second-most in Big 12 history. Those teams are:
- No. 1 seed Texas - Portland 4 Region
- No. 4 seed Kansas State - Albany 2 Region
- No. 5 seed Baylor - Portland 3 Region
- No. 5 seed Oklahoma - Albany 1 Region
- No. 7 seed Iowa State - Portland 4 Region
- No. 8 seed Kansas - Portland 3 Region
- No. 8 seed West Virginia - Albany 2 Region
This is the third consecutive year at least six Big 12 teams have been invited to the Big Dance. The Big 12 has had at least five selections 23 times in 27 tournaments.
Two teams were selected to the inaugural Women's Basketball Invitational Tournament:
- No. 2 seed TCU
- BYU
Also, Cincinnati was selected for the WNIT. The ten postseason teams tie the second-most in Conference history and most since 2010-11.
