Women's Basketball: TCU Draws Oklahoma State in Second Round of Big 12 Tournament
TCU women’s basketball will open postseason play Friday at 1:30 p.m. against Oklahoma State at the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship.
The Horned Frogs (19-10 overall, 6-12 Big 12) earned a first-round bye and the ninth seed after finishing the regular season with four wins over the final five games. Oklahoma State (14-15, 7-11) dropped the regular season finale at Baylor, 67-45, and is the tournament’s eight seed. The winner of this matchup will face Oklahoma, the Big 12 regular season champion, in the quarterfinals.
The Horned Frogs and Cowgirls previously met in early January. Oklahoma State won 67-59 inside Schollmaier Arena. Madison Conner, an All-Big 12 Second Team honoree, led TCU with 20 points while Jaden Owens, who is now out for the season with an MCL injury, had 19 points and six assists. The Cowgirls had four players in double-figure scoring and held the Horned Frogs without a field goal for the final 9:18 of the game.
That was the first game TCU played without center Sedona Prince, who earned All-Big 12 Honorable Mention honors despite missing 11 games. The Horned Frogs struggled at times on offense while adjusting to new personnel and lost the rebounding battle, 44-33. Having Prince back from a finger injury will help TCU’s offense flow better, with a focus on pick-and-roll action, and regain a size advantage down low.
The Horned Frogs have also improved on defense throughout conference play, holding each of their last four opponents under 60 points. Oklahoma State puts up 69 points per contest on 43.9% shooting.
TCU’s last outing ended with a 57-49 loss at No. 24 West Virginia. Conner dropped 18 points on 5-of-12 shooting, including 2-of-7 from three-point range. She knocked down her 88th long ball of the season during the third quarter and is now the school record holder for three-pointers in a season. Zahna Medley set the previous record during the 2015-16 season.
Prince added 15 points, 12 rebounds, and four blocked shots in the loss. The Horned Frogs turned the ball over a season-high 27 times and let the Mountaineers go on a 20-0 scoring run during the first half to secure the lead.
Oklahoma State has posted a 5-10 record since beating TCU. Center Hannah Gusters paces the Cowgirls offensively with 15 points per game. She scored 20 points, grabbed 5 rebounds, and recorded two blocks in the Baylor loss. Guard Quincy Noble also broke double-digits with 10 points. Guards Stailee Heard and Anna Gret Asi can score in bunches as well, averaging nearly 13 points each per contest.
The Cowgirls boast one of the Big 12’s best three-point defenses during conference games, holding opponents to 29.5% from long range. TCU is second in three-point shooting at 34.4% behind only Iowa State.
