Sooners Spoil Frogs Finale, Big 12 Tournament On Tap
So much for momentum heading into postseason play. After winning three of their last four – a stretch that included wins over Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, and Texas – the TCU Horned Frogs (20-11, 9-9) lost at the Oklahoma Sooners (15-16, 5-13). It was the final regular season game of the year, and the Big 12 Tournament is on tap.
Those keen to situational basketball may call this one a lookahead spot. Coming off an exhausting stretch that included games against two top-10 teams and a road stint in one of the tougher places to play nationally, the Frogs simply didn't buckle down in Norman.
Mike Miles once again paced TCU in scoring with 17. Miles scored 10 or more points in 21 of his 23 played games this season. He also passed Alex Robinson (2016-19) for 19th on TCU's all-time scoring list.
Damion Baugh led the team in minutes played (37) and rebounds (8), while adding 13 points.
60 points is far from TCU's best offensive outing, but it was the defensive side of the ball that struggled Saturday night. The Sooners shot an efficient 50% from the field (25-of-50) and out-rebounded the Frogs 40-26. TCU only turned the ball over five times while forcing 13 from Oklahoma.
A big blow to the rebounding game was the absence of Eddie Lampkin Jr., who is dealing with a back injury. TCU hopes to return him for the postseason.
While not dire to the outcome of the game, TCU only shot 7-of-11 from the free throw line (64%).
On the Sooners' side, Tanner Groves led the game with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Groves was the gear that ensured Oklahoma never trailed once in the game.
Win or lose, TCU's nine conference wins this season matches their all-time best. In a gauntlet of a conference, the Frogs earned the fifth seed in the conference tournament.
TCU plays the third-seed Kansas State Wildcats (23-8, 11-7) in the opening round of the Big 12 Tournament. The game tips off Thursday at 8:30 p.m. CT from T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo., and will be broadcast on ESPN2.
The winner of this game advances to the quarterfinals where they await the winner of Texas vs. Oklahoma State/Oklahoma.
