TCU Women's Basketball: Three More Walk-On Guards Added To Roster
It went from good to bad to ugly rather quickly for the TCU women's basketball team (14-4, 1-6) over the last couple of weeks. The team started the season setting a program record winning streak of 14 games. For the first time in program history, the Frogs went undefeated (13-0) in conference play. They won their first conference game when they hosted BYU on December 30.
For first-year coach Mark Campbell's squad, everything was looking up. Then in the second conference game, at Baylor on January 3, Sedona Prince, one of the team's top scorers, injured her finger and will be out until late February/early March. The team would then lose four straight conference games, including that Baylor game.
Then last week, things took a turn for the worse. Injuries within the program caused the cancellation of both games last week - a home game against Kansas State and a road game against Iowa State. The injuries included point guard Jaden Owens' season-ending ACL injury suffered at Houston and season-ending ankle surgery for backup forward DaiJa Turner.
The Horned Frogs dropped to 1-6 in Big 12 play but remained 14-4 overall since the forfeits did not count against the overall record.
Open tryouts were held late last week. On Sunday, TCU volleyball student-athlete Sarah Sylvester was added as a preferred walk-on for the remainder of the 2023-24 season. The sophomore led TCU volleyball in blocks per set this season with 1.16 and set the school record for blocks in a three-set match (13).
Sylvester played basketball at Marian High School in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan where she earned All-Catholic High School League honors as a junior and senior. She is the first TCU student-athlete in the Big 12 era to play varsity volleyball and basketball.
Then on Monday afternoon, three more names were added to the roster as Piper Davis, Ella Hamlin, and Mekhayia Moore all received preferred walk-on invitations to join the team for the remainder of the season.
Piper Davis - Freshman, 5'8" Guard - Boise, Idaho
Davis guided Timberline to the Idaho High School Activities Association (IHSAA) 5A Girls Basketball State Championship in 2022. She started every game at guard along the Wolves' championship run. Davis was selected to compete in the 2023 Idaho State All-Star Game at the conclusion of her final prep season. She was tabbed to the IdahoSports.com All-Tournament second team and earned honorable mention All-Conference accolades her senior year. Davis scored a career-high 22 points in the first round of the 2023 IHSAA 5A Girls Basketball State Championship. Davis becomes the second member of her family to play Division I basketball. Her father, Jerrod Davis, played for Gonzaga from 1989-1992.
Ella Hamlin - Freshman, 5'9" Guard - Granbury, Texas
Hamlin scored more than 1,500 career points over a four-year varsity run at Granbury HS. She was crowned District Offensive Player of the Year in 2022 and 2023. Hamlin averaged 18 points per game and scored a career-high 42 points at the expense of Lovelady HS her senior year. She also played one season of club basketball for Team Lex.
Mekhayia Moore - Sophomore, 5'7" Guard - Brownsboro, Texas
Moore led the Bearettes to their first-ever TX UIL Girls Basketball State Championship as a senior in 2022. She was named State Championship MVP and chosen to the State Championship All-Tournament team following Brownsboro's title game triumph. Moore tallied more than 1,000 career points over a four-year varsity run. A dedicated student, Moore graduated as Brownsboro's 2022 Salutatorian and is a member of TCU's Chancellor's Scholars Program
