Big 12 Football Week 7: Houston’s Hail Mary Highlights the Conference Slate
The Week 7 highlights started with a thriller on Thursday night in Houston. The Cougars and West Virginia’s game had 56 total points and five lead changes in the second half. The last 0:22 was just crazy, ranking up there with last week’s epic Red River Rivalry game.
West Virginia, down 35-32, had 4th and ten from the 50 with 0:22 left to play. Garrett Greene threw to Hudson Clement, who zigzagged into the end zone. WVU took the lead, but an excessive celebration penalty was called, which gave Houston excellent field position. With just 0:03 remaining, Houston’s Donovan Smith threw a 49-yard Hail Mary into the endzone. The first Cougars receiver missed the ball but tipped it. Stephen Johnson caught the deflection and walked into the end zone, giving Houston the win.
Iowa State extended their conference winning streak with a 20-point win in Cincinnati. Oklahoma State got their second-straight home win over a team from the Sunflower State with an exciting one-possession win over Kansas. Kansas State got their first road win of the season, thanks to true freshman backup quarterback Avery Johnson, who had five rushing touchdowns to give K-State the win.
And TCU stopped its losing streak with a decisive 44-11 win over BYU. Backup redshirt freshman quarterback Josh Hoover had his first career start. He threw for 439 yards including four touchdowns.
