Big 12 Football Week 11: OSU Gives Us the Annual Poke Choke
Just when we thought we were headed for an all-orange Big 12 Championship game with Texas and Oklahoma State, Week 11 told us to wait a bit on that assumption.
Oklahoma State traveled to the Bounce House in Orlando to face UCF. In a rainstorm, the Knights played the role of spoiler with a 45-3 blowout win. We thought the annual Poke Choke occurred earlier in the season when OSU lost to South Alabama. Nope. It came with a crucial game in November.
However, two teams – Kansas and West Virginia – were eliminated from the championship game race after losses in Week 11. Texas Tech traveled to Lawrence and pulled out an upset over the Jayhawks. Texas Tech had a 13-0 lead going into the 4th quarter, but Kansas made it interesting, kicking a field goal to tie the game 13-13 with 0:30 left. But that was just enough time for Tech to make three passes for 63 yards, setting up a game-winning field goal from 30 yards. Oklahoma had no problem with West Virginia easily winning 59-20.
Kansas State and Iowa State also kept their hopes alive for a berth in the championship game with big wins. K-State welcomed Baylor to Manhattan. They scored their first touchdown in the first five minutes and didn’t look back. They won 59-25. The late game was in Provo, with Iowa State facing BYU. The Cyclones got their sixth win of the season with a 45-13 win.
Texas remains in the driver’s seat for a spot in the championship game after beating TCU 29-26. The Longhorns had a 26-6 halftime lead and looked to be on their way to a huge win. The Frogs fought back and made the game interesting, scoring 20 4th-quarter points. Texas held on and won 29-26.
Only one game did not have implications for the championship game. Cincinnati won their first-ever Big 12 conference game with a victory on the road at Houston. The Bearcats won 24-14.
With its win, Iowa State became the 7th team in the conference to become bowl eligible. With its loss, Baylor became the second team after Cincinnati to not eligible for a bowl game. The other five teams all hope to become bowl eligible in the season's final two weeks.
