BREAKING: Arizona State, Utah Apply To Join Big 12
Finally, the long-rumored movement has been confirmed. On Friday, Arizona State and Utah formally applied for membership into the Big 12 – joining Colorado and Arizona – to begin membership for the 2024 college football season. The Sun Devils and Utes follow Oregon and Washington out the door, who accepted an invite to the Big Ten earlier.
Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, and Utah push the Big 12 membership from 12 to 16. Oklahoma and Texas depart the league for the SEC beginning in 2024, as well.
Arizona State, Utah Latest Big 12 Additions
While UCLA and USC announcing their exit from the Pac-12 incited panic in the conference, Oregon and Washington departing confirms it. Commissioner George Kliavkoff botched a media rights negotiation, dragging it out for months longer than schools were willing to wait.
When doubt was cast in the conference's ability to strike a favorable deal, schools began exploring exiting. The existing media rights deal expires on June 30, 2024 – the final date of the 2023-24 NCAA athletics calendar.
The reported deal Kliavkoff brought to the table was with Apple, would pay schools out around $20M per school, and included streaming incentives. The rumored deal was universally panned among media members and those inside college athletics alike and confirmed the exit of the eight schools.
Cal, Oregon State, Stanford, and Washington State remain the four unclaimed schools. Rumors suggest the Big Ten is interested in Cal and Stanford, although those discussions have remained scant.
