And now for the inexplicably obligatory narrative.
It is coming to an end. Within four years, the iron skillet will be no more: TCU will continue to compete with teams worthy of its caliber, and SMU will embark on a quixotic quest to succeed in a conference comprising teams located along the Atlantic coast (which makes sense considering the conference is called the Atlantic Coast Conference). What that has to do with Dallas? Who knows.
The Frogs are slowly gaining steam. After losing by 3 to Colorado, we beat Nicholls State 41-6 and the University of Houston 36-13. In each game, both the offense and defense have been a bit tighter, performing with a bit more alacrity.
But SMU hates us as no other team does, save maybe Baylor and Kansas State. And they've had a history of disappointing our much better team during otherwise good seasons. In the last twenty years, since TCU started to become a serious contender in college football, SMU has upset us four times, usually by a touchdown or less. And they're going to have momentum on their side, because, for some reason, they think that spending $200 million to play against a bunch of coastal teams is a good idea.
TCU has to its advantage a historically much better team, and we'll be playing on our home turf. Further, no matter what happens, the rivalry is ours: if we do meet for the three more games as projected, TCU will still lead by 7 (and one of SMU's victories was, in fact, a forfeit).
