TCU Football: Texas Halftime Report
After winning the coin toss and electing to differ, the Horned Frogs kicked it off to the No. 7 Texas Longhorns.
Resulting in a touchback, Texas began their drive at the 25. The explosive offense stalled for a three-and-out and was forced to bring on their kicking unit.
Following a three-and-out of their own, TCU punted it back to the Longhorns who picked up some steam on the ensuing drive. Quinn Ewers completed a pass to wide receiver Xavier Worthy for a first down, but after three consecutive handoffs to Jonathan Brooks brought up a 4th and 1 at the TCU 48.
Defensive end Tymon Mitchell came up with a massive tackle to hold the Longhorns short of the line to gain, forcing a turnover on downs.
With the momentum, Emani Bailey broke out for an 11 yard gain before Josh Hoover linked up Jared Wiley and Savion Williams to get into Texas territory.
Despite the promising possession, the Frogs had to settle for a 41-yard field goal by Griffin Kell.
Just after TCU went ahead, Texas answered right back with a two-play, 75-yard drive resulting in a touchdown. Brooks cut through the Horned Frog defense for a 73-yard rush before punching it in with a 2-yard score to put Texas ahead 7-3.
The Frogs inched back on the ensuing drive and capitalized with 55-yard field goal from Kell.
Now for the fun... maybe from a neutral point of view. With the Longhorns at their own 37 yard line, a pass attempt from Ewers intended for Worthy was intercepted by Millard Bradford. Bradford returned the interception before fumbling it back to Texas to take over at the 36 yard line.
In a single play, two teams committed turnovers resulting in a loss of a single yard.
Ewers didn't make the same mistake again this time as he connected with Worthy for a 45 yard pass to the TCU 13. Set up in the red zone, the TCU defense came up with a big stop, forcing a 30-yard field goal by Burt Auburn to extend Texas' lead to 10-6.
Following a miscue from Jordy Sandy on the punt, Texas took over at their own 43. Ewers and Brooks led the Longhorns to a drive that saw them break into the red zone. Lining up for a crucial 4th and 1 at the 8 yard line, Texas was called for a false start, forcing a 32-yard field goal from Auburn to make it 13-6.
With TCU unable to move the ball offensively, Texas took advantage and put together an 85-yard drive, taking 4:54 off the clock. Once in the red zone, a pass to Worthy was completed, but a personal foul on Bud Clark was called to further push the Longhorns toward the end zone. On the following set of downs, Ewers connected with Adonai Mitchell for a 6-yard touchdown. A missed PAT made it 19-6 with 1:01 left in the half.
Despite getting an opportunity at the end of the half, Hoover's pass was intercepted by Terrance Brooks, allowing Texas one last drive in search for points. To finish out the half, Brooks registered a 22-yard rush for a touchdown, extending the Longhorn lead to 26-6.
TCU will receive the 2nd half kickoff.
