TCU Football, Volleyball Athletes Honored With Individual Postseason Awards
Multiple student-athletes from the TCU football and volleyball programs received postseason honors over the past few weeks.
On the football side, Josh Newton, Willis Patrick, and Jared Wiley each earned second team honors on the Associated Press All-Big 12 Team. Newton and Wiley will also play in the Reese’s Senior Bowl with teammate Brandon Coleman.
Volleyball’s Melanie Parra and Jalyn Gibson made the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Southwest Region First Team. Parra was named a AVCA Third Team All-American, too. The Horned Frogs made NCAA Tournament and advanced to the Round of 32 for a second consecutive season.
Newton led TCU with nine pass breakups while adding an interception and 33 tackles. The cornerback started 27 consecutive games for the Horned Frogs after transferring from Louisiana Monroe in 2022. Newton earned All-Big 12 second team honors, as voted on by the conference coaches, and is the 33rd ranked overall NFL prospect by Pro Football Focus.
Patrick joined TCU after stops at Angelo State and Jackson State. He started 12 games at right guard in 2023 and played a team-high 978 snaps while recording a team-best 35 knockdown blocks. Patrick was an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention honoree as well.
Wiley ended the season with a team-high 47 receptions, good for fourth nationally among Power Five tight ends. His eight touchdown catches tied for the national lead at the position and were the most by a Horned Frog since Jalen Reagor’s nine in 2018. The All-Big 12 First Team honoree and Honorable Mention Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year set career highs in receptions in each of the final three games this season, including a personal-best eight catches and two touchdowns at Oklahoma. Wiley broke TCU and Big 12 records for a tight end with 178 receiving yards against Baylor.
Coleman made 11 starts on the offensive line, with four at left guard and seven at left tackle. He allowed one sack over 720 snaps and had 32 knockdown blocks. The conference coaches voted Coleman to the All-Big 12 Second Team and Honorable Mention Offensive Lineman of the Year.
Parra, a native of Sinaloa, Mexico, became the first Horned Frog to earn AVCA All-American honors since 2016 and is the first player in program history to be named to an All-American team. Previously, five Horned Frogs garnered All-American Honorable Mention honors.
A unanimous First-Team All-Big 12 selection, Parra ranked 12 nationally in points per set (5.17) and 17 in kills per set (4.38). The 4.38 kills per set is tied for third in TCU history. She recorded an AVCA National Player of the Week performance in a 3-1 regular season win over Florida State. She tallied 34 kills, a program record for a four-set match and the second-most kills in a single match.
Parra reset the single-season program record for points with 569. Her 482 kills rank fourth on the single-season record list. She is the only player in program history to record 34 kills twice in the same season, broke the single-match point record with 39.5 against Texas Tech and recorded a team-high 13 double-doubles this season.
Gibson averaged 3.24 kills per set on a team-high .259 hitting percentage. She started 27 matches, recorded double-digit kills in 23 matches and led TCU in kills eight times.
The sophomore racked up 11 double-doubles including a career-high 23 kills in a 3-1 win over UCF. A career-best 20 digs came against Iowa State in November. Gibson also earned Second Team All-Big 12 honors.
