Frogs in the Pros: Norrie Loses Australian Open 4th Round Match
Game. Set. Match.
Cam Norrie, a former three-time TCU All-American, and current No. 1 British player, was eliminated from this year’s Australian Open on Monday after losing his 4th Round match to No. 6 Alexander Zverev in a thrilling five-set match.
The Australian Open, the first of four Grand Slams, began on Monday and runs through January 28 at Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
This is the 5th consecutive Australian Open for Norrie. He had never advanced past the 3rd Round in previous appearances in Melbourne. Last year, he was eliminated in the 3rd Round. Norrie's best appearance in any of the four Grand Slam events was at the 2022 Wimbledon when we made it to the semifinal round.
Monday's match against Zverev, from Germany and one of the world's best players, was a very tight match that was lost in a 5th set tiebreaker. Norrie won the first set 7-5, lost the second 3-6, won the third 6-3, and lost the fourth 4-6. Zverev took control in the fifth set tiebreaker and won it 10-3.
Norrie was the last Brit remaining in the Australian Open. In the quarterfinals, Zverev will next face No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz.
"I thought it was a high, high level match from both sides," Norrie said after the match. "I fought hard, right until the end. He did a really good job."
“It’s disappointing, but I think it’s nice to know I’m just looking for ways to evolve my game,” Norrie said. “Yeah, I was toe‑to‑toe with him, and I think it just shows. I got absolutely chopped by him at the end in Vienna in the last year, and I managed to take a completely different approach.”
