Quentin Johnston Selected By Chargers In First Round Of NFL Draft
The Los Angeles Chargers selected TCU receiver Quentin Johnston with the 21st overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Johnston becomes the 17th Horned Frog to be selected in the first round of the NFL Draft and the seventh in the last 14 years. He went just one pick after Jaxon Smith-Njigba, the first drafted receiver.
His TCU career holds as one of the most productive, despite playing the minimum three seasons. Johnston averaged 19.0 yards per catch – a huge draw to NFL franchises – which is the most in TCU history; his 2,190 receiving yards and 14 receiving touchdowns rank eighth.
Johnston was the first Horned Frog to come off the board in the NFL Draft and the lone first rounder, both of which were expected. On Day 2, watch for a litany of more names to come off the board like Steve Avila, Tre'Vius Hodges-Tomlinson, and Dylan Horton. Running back Kendre Miller may also slide into one of the next two rounds.
Although Johnston's stock reportedly was sliding ahead of the draft, he didn't fall far. He joins the immensely talented Justin Herbert and makes a good receiving group even better. The Chargers are expected to contend for another playoff spot this season.
The Bolts run a receiver-friendly system and will almost certainly pair Johnston with deep threat Mike Williams. Herbert has one of the best arms in the league and should give Johnston plenty of downfield looks. Given that the organization drafted him in the first round, he should be involved from Day 1.
