Men’s Tennis: TCU Advances to Indoor Semifinals
The No. 3 TCU men’s tennis team (10-0) did what the football team could not do last month – destroy Georgia.
In the quarterfinals of the ITA Indoor National Championships, the event TCU won last year, the Frogs swept No. 16 Georgia 5-0 on Saturday. The win advances the Frogs to the semifinals, where they will meet No. 2 Kentucky on Sunday afternoon. The event is being played in Chicago.
TCU had not beaten Georgia in 40 years. The Horned Frogs have now won six straight Indoor Nationals duals and are 11-4 in the tournament since 2019. The shutout of the Bulldogs was TCU's second in as many days. The Horned Frogs commenced their stay in the Windy City with a 4-0 rout of No. 10 Baylor on Friday. TCU also extended a pair of notable streaks with the result. The Horned Frogs notched their school record and nation-leading 22nd straight indoor victory. Of the 22 wins, 14 have come vs. ranked opponents. The triumph was TCU's fifth straight win over a program featured in the top-15 of the ITA team rankings.
"I know they were motivated, too," said TCU head coach David Roditi. "To beat Georgia, that one feels a little more special after our January. It's for all of you – Frog fans, coaches, coach Sonny Dykes – we were thinking about you. That was a driving force behind the motivation."
TCU 5 – Georgia 0
Doubles Play – TCU Won
It was a battle for the doubles point. TCU never led by more than two games on any court. Sebastian Gorzny and Pedro Vives won their set 7-5 on court three. However, on court one, the duo of Luc Fomba and Jake Fearnley lost their set 7-6. It was the first loss for this duo all season. It came down to the battle on court two, where Sander Jong and Jack Pinnington pulled off the win at 7-5. The win on court two gave TCU the doubles point. It marked a program-high 12th straight doubles point win, dating back to last season.
Singles Play – TCU won 4-0
TCU then won 10-of-12 completed singles sets to complete the shutout. The Horned Frogs clinched the match with sweeps on courts one, three, four, and five.
Jong was the first to sweep, playing on court four, winning 6-4, 6-3.
Soon after, Fearnley obtained the most notable singles victory in 2023 for TCU. The junior swept Quinn, No. 5 in the ITA singles rankings, 7-6 [7-1], 6-3. Quinn was the nation's top-ranked singles player following the conclusion of the fall season. He represents the highest-ranked player Fearnley, currently ranked No. 17, and TCU have defeated thus far.
Pinnington and Gorzny won their matches simultaneously. Pinnington, on court three, won 7-5, 7-5. And Gorzny, on court five, won 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.
Next up: The Horned Frogs will face No. 2 Kentucky at noon on Sunday, February 19, for the semifinal match. If the Frogs win this, they will defend their national championship title in a match on Monday versus either No. 4 Michigan or No. 8 Texas.
