Recruiting: Horned Frogs Land State Champion Quarterback
The Horned Frogs officially have a family legacy going as class of 2024 quarterback Hauss Hejny (pronounced Hoss HAY-nee) has committed to be a Horned Frog. The dual-threat signal caller made his announcement via Twitter with a caption that simply read, “Go Frogs!”
The commitment came early in the afternoon on Thursday, April 6, just two weeks after his de-commitment from Duke, where he committed in January.
“I committed to Duke pretty early,” Hejny said shortly after announcing his commitment to TCU. “It was my first real committable offer, and I felt good about it at the time.”
Despite conflicting feelings about leaving Duke without a quarterback, Hejny knew it was a dream of his to play for the Horned Frogs.
“I had a great relationship with them,” Hejny acknowledged. “I felt good about the direction of their program, but at the end of the day, there were opportunities that I had always dreamed of that were coming in. So, I wanted to do the right thing. Me decommiting left them in a bad spot to find a quarterback in a short amount of time, but I just want to enjoy this process and look it over, and scale things out. And I’ve always wanted to go to TCU. I grew up a Horned Frog.”
The 5-foot-11 prospect threw for 2,000 yards and 20 touchdowns in his junior year. He added 1,276 yards and 15 touchdowns on the ground, leading the nearby Aledo Bearcats to a record eleventh state championship.
In the state championship game alone, Hejny completed 11 of 15 pass attempts for 175 yards and two touchdowns, adding 143 yards on ten carries and two more touchdowns.
Hejny’s head coach at Aledo, Tim Buchanan, offered his quick thoughts on the announcement, “I’m really excited for Hauss and TCU. I believe it will be a great fit for both.”
Hejny will not be in unfamiliar territory as TCU has recently acquired another former Aledo prospect in JoJo Earle after his transfer from Alabama. On top of that, Hejny also joins a friend from All Saints, where he attended before Aledo, in Tommy Brockermeyer, who also transferred in from Alabama.
“As soon as I get in there, I’ll be doing my best to compete for the job,” Hejny said. “But to be able to play on the same field as JoJo will be special. And then my other teammate from All Saints, Brockermeyer, who I played a year with, it will be good to reconnect with both of them for sure.”
Hejny is the first in the next generation of a TCU family, as his parents, Jesse Hejny and JimAnne Hejny (nee. Baker), were both Horned Frog athletes. Jesse played defensive end for the Frogs in 2004 and 2005, while Hauss’s mother JimAnne was a star on the basketball court and on the track.
“This is something I have dreamed of my whole life,” Hejny commented. “I pretty much grew up within the TCU athletic facilities, so to be able to go out there and make a name for myself in the same building and university that my parents did, it’s extremely special. I’m super blessed to be in the position that I am in and extremely blessed to have parents that gave me support through the whole process, which has allowed me to seek further opportunity.”
Hauss also runs track, and in his sophomore year, he recorded a personal best of 10.68 seconds in the 100-meter dash.
