At right around 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, the NCAA baseball committee announced that Southern Miss would host the super-regional against the Tennessee Volunteers. The Golden Eagles hosted a super regional last season. However, they were swept by the eventual champion Ole Miss Rebels.

The decision may initially come as a shock to Volunteer fans. But the decision was made with viable reasons. The Golden Eagles posted more wins in the regular season than the Vols, and they won their conference tournament as opposed to Tennessee getting stomped in the first round of their conference tournament. Tennessee looks to avenge last season's result in the super regional as Notre Dame pulled off the upset to advance to the College World Series in Knoxville. The last time the Volunteers played in a super regional away from Knoxville was in 2005. They played against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in Atlanta, Georgia beating them in two games and outscoring them over the course of that stretch 16-5.

This upcoming super regional in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, marks the third straight one the Volunteers have been to. It is the seventh super regional they have been to in program history. If Tennessee gets Southern Miss out of the way, they will go to the sixth college world series in program history. Although they have been to Omaha plenty of times, they have yet to win a national championship. The closest the Vols have gotten to winning one came in 1951 when they were runner-ups to the national champion, Oklahoma. The Golden Eagles are looking to make it back to the College World Series for the first time since 2009. Game one of the super regional round will be Saturday, June 10th, at 3:00 p.m. on ESPNU.
